NFL: Preseason-San Diego Chargers at Tennessee Titans Joshua Lindsey-USA TODAY Sports

Chargers host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the first meeting for these two teams in over three years. That surprised me because I could have sworn they’ve played each other more recently than that, but what do I know?

This game marks the (hotly-anticipated?) reunion for Ken Whisenhunt and his former team. Does Ken have some extra motivation to prove to his former employer that they made a huge mistake canning him? I don’t think anyone faults the Titans canning Whisenhunt after he compiled a rather-impressive 4-20 record as head coach. In fact, at 4-4, this year’s TItans team already has surpassed Ken’s win total as head coach.

Today’s game also marks the first matchup between Philip Rivers vs Marcus Mariota. You’ll remember that the Chargers almost traded the veteran Quarterback to the Titans, in exchange for the draft position to select Marcus Mariota. Obviously that never happened, but you just know the comparisons between the two quarterbacks will be discussed at length during the game.

Both teams are vying for playoff spots. Obviously the loss to the Broncos last week has made the path to the playoffs a little more difficult for the Chargers in the league’s best division, but they’re still somewhat in the hunt for a wildcard spot. Sure would be something to see three teams from the AFC West in the playoffs (and the Chargers among them). The Titans on the other hand are playing in the league’s worst division in the AFC South and are only one game back from the division-leading Houston Texans, who have looked less than impressive this season (despite their 5-3 record).
