Melvin Gordon named NFL’s Clutch Performer of the Week

New, comments

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon won some sort of random weekly NFL award for being the best player on the field against the Tennessee Titans.

I’m going to be honest with you. The NFL, at this point, has so many weekly and monthly awards that I have lost track of all of them and don’t care about any of them.

That being said, Melvin Gordon won one...

More important than winning the award is the fact that Melvin Gordon was un-freaking-believable against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday and nearly as good against the Denver Broncos the week before.

In his last two games, Gordon has gone for 416 yards from scrimmage on 63 touches, and added in a touchdown to boot. That’s over 6.5 yards per touch.

Even more important than even that? The fact that Melvin Gordon has learned to hold on to the ball late in games. His patience has gotten better, his balance and strength has always been good, but it’s his ball security that has really pushed him game over the top this season.

I don’t take back everything I ever said about Melvin Gordon. Taking stuff back is stupid. But I will admit that in most of my predictions for how the rest of his career would pan out, I did not see a run like this in him. Count me as a fan and color me impressed.

Also impressed? Philip Michael Rivers...

Congrats, Melvin Gordon!
