Chargers Training Camp Notes: July 30th, 2015

Let's all over-evaluate talent in practice as we breakdown the first day of Chargers Training Camp.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Chargers kicked off Training Camp today in helmets, jerseys and shorts in what resembled a 2 hour conditioning test.  Though there wasn't too much competition on Day 1 of Training Camp we did learn some things:

Early on in Offensive Line drills newly acquired lineman Joe Barksdale and Johnnie Troutman rotated at Right Guard while DJ Fluker manned the Right Tackle spot but as the drills moved from Offense vs. Defense, Troutman played with the first team.

It didn't change by the end of the day.

The left side of the line was as good as advertised...in practice.

As for rookie Running Back Melvin Gordon, it was an up and down first practice.

For the 3rd round pick Craig Mager it was mostly a down day.

Some more down on him than others.

Other news and notes:

-Ryan Carrethers went down with what looked like a cramp, trainers worked on him between drills and he ran back to the sideline. Shouldn't be anything to worry about especially on a hot day like it was in San Diego today.

-Stevie Johnson looked like the best route runner on the field today and he also had the catch of the day with a one-handed grab near the sideline.

-Jason Verrett looked like everything he was last year before his injury. His close on the ball is something else, he used his quickness to knock down a ball intended for, the much taller, Malcom Floyd.

-Both wide receivers Austin Pettis and undrafted free agent Titus Davis looked particularly quick to the ball and they both showed good hands.

Most importantly:

Practices will start to pick up speed in the next coming days and the guys will get some pads on and there will be a lot more to report but so far Day 1 of Chargers Training Camp is underway.
