I love this story. I really do.
Mike Scifres is probably good enough to keep punting and he's got another year left on his contract that would pay him over $4 million to come back and do it for the San Diego Chargers.
However, like many athletes preach but not many follow-through on, Scifres appears to know that he's not the dominant punter he used to be anymore and doesn't want to waste everyone's time just to collect a paycheck.
A case could be made for Scifres to be the best punter, and maybe the best special teams players, in Chargers history. The fact that he never made it to the Pro Bowl is so shocking that it'll definitely end up being a trivia question that wins a beer for someone at a bar one day.
Congrats to you, Mike. For being a great guy, a great player, and for walking away when it made the most sense instead of when people stopped offering to pay you. It's a testament to the type of person that you are.
