There’s no denying that Joe Barksdale (84.9) has proved a great pickup, even if the team hadn’t suffered all the injuries they had. Injuries have forced guys to play who really shouldn’t have: Trevor Robinson (28.2), chiefly. Every year, the Chargers seem to pick up more and more injuries on the line. Is it bad luck, or something about the guys on the roster? Whatever it is, it’s the main factor in such a low ranking.

Most execs told me they expected the Chargers defense to take a big step this season. While they've had their share of injuries on that side of the ball too, the defense has severely underachieved based on how the personnel is viewed by evaluators around the NFL. The Chargers defense is second-worst in yards per play (6.34), sixth-worst against the run (124.6 per game), tied for second-worst in turnovers forced (7), and fifth-worst in points against (28.4).
