According to several published reports, including one from ESPN, the Washington Redskins have hired San Diego Charger linebackers coach Joe Barry away from the Bolts to become their new defensive coordinator. Barry was their second choice, as they were targeting Vic Fangio, who took the DC job for the Chicago Bears instead. The reports suggested that Fangio urged Washington to hire Barry once he turned them down.
It probably did not take too much persuading for Washington to go Barry's direction; he has several ties to Washington's front office from his eight years coaching linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One of Washington's executives also has ties to Barry from the time they were both in San Diego. Coach Barry has been a linebacker coach for 12 seasons in the NFL and was the defensive coordinator for the Lions in 2007 and 2008. The job in Washington may prove to be as challenging as his previous stint as a coordinator.
The Chargers have not yet released any information about potential replacements.
