It's time. First-round pick Jason Verrett (shoulder) expected to make NFL debut Sunday vs. 49ers. Comes near home for Fairfield native.

Well, that's great news. As many of you know, I was a bit concerned about the prospect of heading into the regular season with Jason Verrett only having played in a single (meaningless) exhibition. I even said that, without at least two impressive games under his belt, he stood no chance of being a starting CB opposite Brandon Flowers for Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Now that it appears Verrett is going to play against the 49ers, and theoretically play a lot, I think we officially have a competition on the outside between him and Shareece Wright. It will be interesting to see how they match up against tough, speedy WRs such as Stevie Johnson, Anquan Boldin, and Michael Crabtree, in an offense where plays could easily get extended with Colin Kaepernick's scrambling abilities.
