San Diego Chargers in Contract Years

Which San Diego Chargers players will be playing in the final year of their contract with the team during the upcoming season?

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

"Contract year" is a phrase that gets thrown a lot in the NFL. Players in the final year of their contract will typically either play better than usual, giving more effort in an attempt to get more money in their next contract, or worse (due to stress).

We've talked a lot about Jeromey Clary being in the final year of his contract with the San Diego Chargers, but which other players on the roster might see their performance get better or worse this year as a result of being in the "contract year"?

Here's the full list of San Diego Chargers players heading into the final year of their contracts, with 2013 starters italicized.

  • Jeromey Clary, G/OT
  • Nick Hardwick, C
  • Eddie Royal, WR
  • Dwight Freeney, OLB/DE
  • Ryan Mathews, RB
  • King Dunlap, OT
  • Larry English, OLB
  • Vincent Brown, WR
  • Marcus Gilchrist, CB/S
  • Jonas Mouton, ILB
  • Shareece Wright, CB
  • Andrew Gachkar, LB
  • Crezdon Butler, CB
  • Thomas Keiser, OLB
  • Willie Smith, OT
  • Seyi Ajirotutu, WR
  • Rich Ohrnberger, G/C
  • Matt Conrath, DT
  • Mike Harris, OT
  • Lawrence Guy, DE
  • Richard Marshall, CB
  • Jake Byrne, TE
  • Kenny Wiggins, OT

Is there anyone on that list that you'd be okay wit the team signing long-term right now? Or do you, much like the Chargers' front office, need to see how they perform in 2014 first?
