NFL Draft results: RB Marion Grice to the San Diego Chargers with No. 201 pick

With their pick in the 6th round, the San Diego Chargers add running back Marion Grice out of Arizona State

USA TODAY Sports

With the 201st pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers select a running back? Marion Grice out of Arizona State will join what is becoming a crowded offensive backfield that already includes Ryan Mathews, Donald Brown, Danny Woodhead, and Kerwynn Williams.

Grice rushed for 996 yards and 14 TDs last year while also adding 50 catches for 438 yards and 6 TDs. The Sun Devil running back was not on our big board due to the perceived lack of need at the position. Grice also returned kicks and that may be where he has the best chance of contributing to the 2014 Chargers team. An all purpose back, he could eventually produce in the running game, passing game and on special teams.

The pick is a bit of a headscratcher, but the need at kick returner was real and Grice's production as one is inarguable. Also, it's worth noting that Woodhead seems likely to command a high price next off season. Tom Telesco continues to appear to value productive players at positions of need over almost anything else. There is exceedingly mild character concern with his misdemeanor in high school for firing paint ball guns at bystanders from a truck.
