San Diego Chargers Snap Counts: Week 7 vs Kansas City Chiefs

New, comments

A weekly feature looking at the distribution of playing time for the San Diego Chargers players on offense and defense. This week, we see who contributed in the close loss to the Kansas City Chiefs

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers were favorites at home against the divisional rival Kansas City Chiefs, but with injuries mounting and the Andy Reid-coached team coming off a bye, it wasn't terribly surprising that they lost a close contest.

Let's see who "contributed" to the first home loss of the season:

Pos. Name W7 Snaps "% of Total W7" W6 Snaps "% of Total W6" "WoW% Change"

WR Eddie Royal 32 62% 19 26% 36%
G Johnnie Troutman 31 60% 41 56% 3%
G Chris Watt 21 40% 32 44% -3%

TE John Phillips 14 27% 17 23% 4%
RB Ronnie Brown 13 25% 17 23% 2%
TE Ladarius Green 8 15% 37 51% -35%
WR Seyi Ajirotutu 2 4% 22 30% -26%
WR Dontrelle Inman 0 0% 1 1% -1%

Well, at least there weren't any injuries to the offensive line this week. We were treated to an extra helping of Eddie Royal and David Johnson mostly at the expense of Ladarius Green and Seyi Ajirotutu. I'm not sure that's a great trade given the kind of routes Royal was asked to run. He had about four opportunities to make big catches downfield and came away with zero. You have to think Green's size would have been helpful in making those contested grabs.

On to the defense:

Yikes. More injuries at the corner position. Shareece Wright is serviceable playing in place of Jason Verrett, but replacing Brandon Flowers' snaps with more Richard Marshall is just awful. We saw less Gachkar this week thanks to the return of Reggie Walker, but Walker's day will be best remembered for an incredibly stupid personal foul that extended a Chiefs drive. Attaochu and Verrett need to get healthy fast. Melvin Ingram and Manti Te'o wouldn't hurt at this point either.
