San Diego Chargers Injury News: 8/20 Training Camp Update

An overall look at the health of the San Diego Chargers after two 2014 preseason games.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Calm down. #DontPanic. There is no breaking news regarding an injured San Diego Chargers player. This is mostly just a recap on who is injured and who isn't as the team prepares to take on the San Francisco 49ers this weekend.

Without an actual injury report (teams don't have to submit those until the regular season begins), this is a little tougher than normal...

Vincent Brown (calf)

Downtown Vinny Brown need to get healthy in the next few days and have a monster game against the 49ers, otherwise his time in San Diego is done.

Jeromey Clary (hip and shoulder)

Clary is going to start the year on the PUP list and be good OT/OG depth about halfway through the season if the team needs it.

Lawrence Guy (shoulder)

This team needs more injured defensive linemen like I need a hole in the head, but here is Guy. Still think he makes the team due to his versatility to play 3-4 DE and 4-3 DT equally well.

Manti Te'o (foot)

Of course his stupid foot is hurt again. Te'o is out for the rest of the week, and probably the team's final two preseason games. Look for Kavell Conner and Reggie Walker to battle over which one gets to (maybe) steal Manti's starting spot away this year.

Sean Lissemore (ankle)

The team's starting Nose Tackle is gone until (at least) Week 1. The team's best Defensive End has been fighting through lower-leg injuries throughout training camp. The team's second best Defensive End has been hovering somewhere around "terrible" for the last year-plus. This injury is big, no... huge. This is one of those scenarios where Tom Telesco prays for Kwame Geathers and Ryan Carrethers to be mystic men while also keeping an eye out players that might be cut.

Jahleel Addae (hamstring)

This one hurts, and it could be the biggest reason Marcus Gilchrist keeps the starting Strong Safety job (and a roster spot). Addae has looked good when on the field, but those hamstring injuries tend to nag safeties for a while. He'll make the squad, but he won't be the starter by Week 1 as many (myself included) predicted.

Jason Verrett (shoulder)

Let's end on a bit of good news. Jason Verrett is out of the red non-contact jersey at practice and participating in scrimmage, although still sitting out tackling drills. My guess is that he plays just one preseason game, against the Cardinals, and starts the year as the team's nickel Cornerback.
