Thought it would be fun to change it up and to do a scenario in a Mock Draft where what I think would happen and what I would do if I was the General Manager.
What Will Happen- Blake Bortles
What I Would Do- Jadeveon Clowney The Texans should take the best player in the draft, because, duh. Instead Bill O’Brien will roll the dice on Bortles and likely develop him into a star & shut everyone up.
2. Atlanta-Falcons
What Will Happen- Jadeveon Clowney
What I would Do- This would be the Rams pick, and I’d draft Greg Robinson in a heart beat.
Let’s stop pretending that this isn’t a lock. The Falcons will trade up for Clowney, because, duh.
What Will Happen- Teddy Bridgewater
What I would Do- Teddy Bridgewater
Gus the Goat Bradley knows what type of QB it takes to win, one that doesn’t make mistakes. He gets an excellent one in Teddy. Jags luck up here.
What Will Happen- Sammy Watkins
What I would Do- Johnny Manziel
Browns will roll the dice and take the best QB available with their 2nd 1st round pick, but I’d take Manziel here. People forget he’s still developing as a player. His jump from a RS FR to RS SO was incredible. Still a ways to go, but he’ll only continue to improve.
What Will Happen- Greg Robinson
What I Would Do- Jake Matthews
The Raiders take the 2nd best player in the NFL draft, and still find a way to get worse in the offseason. I would take an established tackle, especially LT Veldheer’s return up in question.
What Will Happen- Jake Matthews
What I would Do- Would Still be the Falcons pick, I’d take Lewan The Rams will trade back and still get a very good player in Jake Matthews.
The way the board lies for the Falcons(because they won’t trade up in the alternate scenario), just take the next best OT instead of "reaching" for Barr/Mack.
What Will Happen- Khalil Mack - Edge Rusher
What I Would Do- Khalil Mack - Edge Rusher
For the record, I don’t think Mack nor Barr are top 10 talents, but this seems to be a good fit where Mack can come in and be an immediate edge rusher that the Bucs desperately need on passing downs. As well as shore up their porous run defense.
What Will Happen- Johnny Manziel - QB
What I Would Do- Anthony Barr - Edge Rusher
Money Manziel gets a chance to develop under Norv Turner. I think the light bulb comes on for Norval as he tailors his offense. On the flip-side, the way the board shakes out I’m taking a LB with all the upside in the world to help my secondary.
What Will Happen- Taylor Lewan - OT
What I Would Do- HaHa Clinton Dix -S
Lewan has experience on the right side of the line, and the Bills will look to surround E.J. Manuel with 2 bookend tackles. What I would do, with the board standing as it is, is replace Jarius Byrd with the best safety in the class.
10. Detroit Lions
What Will Happen - Marqise Lee - WR
What I Would Do- Odell Beckham Jr - WR
I think by the time Lee has ran again at his Pro Day, he’ll run much faster than he did at the combine and move back up the charts. He’s a better fit than Mike Evans, and will take pressure of Calvin Johnson. I’d take OBJ because I think he’s the 2nd best receiver in the class.
11. Tennessee Titans
What Will Happen- Anthony Barr - Edge Rusher
What I Would Do- Morgan Moses - OT
I would look to upgrade the pass rush. Barr could work wonders under Ray Horton. The Titans continue to build around Jake Locker by protecting him with the next best offensive tackle on the board.
12. New York Giants
What Will Happen- Xavier Su’a-Filo - OG
What I Would Do- Xavier Su’a-Filo - OG
It’s never too early to take any position. If that position helps your team the best, you take him.The Giants grab the best Guard in the draft in effort to keep Eli Manning conscious.
13. St. Louis Rams
What Will Happen- Mike Evans - WR
What I Would Do- Mike Evans - WR
The Rams finally feel they’ve found Sam Bradford a #1 Receiver. Evans is a receiver that dominates the catch point and I don’t see how the Rams can pass up on him.
14. Chicago Bears
What Will Happen- Kony Ealy - DE
What I Would Do- Timmy Jernigan - DT
The Bears will take Ealy(who I don’t think should go top 50) in effort to replace Julius Peppers. I would solidify the interior line that was awful against the run by taking Jernigan.
What Will Happen- Darqueze Dennard - CB
What I Would Do- Darqueze Dennard - CB
He just feels like a Steeler with the way he plays the game. Ike Taylor possibly on the way out, the pick makes a lot of sense for Pittsburgh after Dennard answered his speed questions at the combine.
16. Dallas Cowboys
What Will Happen- Aaron Donald - DT
What I Would Do- Aaron Donald - DT
Donald just can’t get washed out against the run, he doesn’t need to be a run stopper. He has obvious pass rush ability and gives Dallas a much needed upgrade over Nick Hayden.
17. Baltimore Ravens
What Will Happen- Odell Beckham Jr - WR
What I Would Do- Zack Martin - OT/G
Ozzie loves SEC players, and he’ll get a great one in Beckham Jr. to take pressure off Joe Flacco. On my board I continue to build around Flacco, and draft the best tackle left on the board.
18. New York Jets
What Will Happen- Eric Ebron - TE
What I Would Do- Eric Ebron - TE
Makes too much sense. Give your Quarterback a security blanket. Ebron is an incredible athlete and would be the best receiver on the team.
19. Miami Dolphins
What Will Happen- Morgan Moses - OT
What I Would Do- Gabe Jackson - OG
Miami gets a very underrated OT in Moses. On my board, there’s too many question marks at offensive tackle on the board, so the Dolphins upgrade their run game and select Jackson who is a plug and play type player.
What Will Happen- Justin Gilbert - CB
What I Would Do- Justin Gilbert - CB
The Cardinals would have 2 of the most athletic corners in the game. There isn’t an offensive lineman here that they consider, so they upgrade their secondary. Gilbert is great value at this point and can develop under Patrick Peterson.
What Will Happen- Ra’Shede Hageman - DL
What I Would Do- Ryan Shazier
The Packers will take Hageman and hope he pans out and develops, much like Mike Daniels. I would take Shazier here, and upgrade the Linebacking corps on all 3 downs. He brings ultra athleticism to the defense.
What Will Happen- Calvin Pryor
What I Would Do- Bradley Roby
The lovefest for Pryor is something I’ll never understand, but Chip Kelly said he wants to get more physical on the defensive side of the ball. I’d take Roby here and get more athletic and upgrade at the cornerback position.
What Will Happen- Jimmie Ward - S
What I Would Do- Jimmie Ward - S
The Chiefs need an upgrade at safety opposite Eric Berry, Ward is the best on the board and would be an easy decision if the it shakes out like this.
What Will Happen- C.J. Mosley - LB
What I Would Do- C.J. Mosley - LB
The Bengals are stacked as a whole, and can afford to roll the dice on a talent like Mosley. His value at 24 is just too much to pass up.
What Will Happen- Jason Verrett - CB
What I Would Do- Marcus Martin - OL
If the board shakes out like this, I can’t see San Diego passing up a talent like Verrett, and I certainly wouldn’t be mad at the pick, he’s arguably the best at the position. I would take Martin, who might be a reach at this point, but he can come in and start at OG, and down the road replace Hardwick at OC. Protecting Philip Rivers is the most important thing for San Diego.
26. Cleveland Browns
What Will Happen- Derek Carr - QB
What I Would Do- Brandin Cooks - WR
Somehow, the Browns get lucky and land Carr with their 2nd 1st round pick. Since I selected Manziel earlier, I’m taking speedy wide out Brandin Cooks to get more firepower on that offense.
What Will Happen- Dee Ford - Edge Rusher
What I Would Do- Lamarcus Joyner - S
The Saints roll the dice on Ford’s medical, and take the best available pass rusher. On my board, I’m taking Joyner to give Rob Ryan 2 of the more versatile safeties in the game.
What Will Happen- Joel Bitonio - OT
What I Would Do- Brandon Thomas - OT
Either way, the Panthers need help at tackle. Cam Newton needs weapons, yes, but it doesn’t matter if he’s not protected. I went with the more athletic Thomas, but Bitino would be fine here.
What Will Happen- Louis Nix III - DL
What I Would Do- Kyle Fuller - CB
Nix makes too much sense, he could play anywhere between the B gaps for the Patriots. I would take Kyle Fuller who at this point, is the best player and too good to pass up at 29.
30. San Franciso 49ers
What Will Happen- Martavis Bryant - WR
What I Would Do- Jason Verrett - CB
The 49ers want to add speed on offense and Bryant is a big wide out that can run as fast as anyone. He’s still raw, but the 49ers will take a chance on him. I would take Verrett and shore up the secondary with a great cover corner.
31. Denver Broncos
What Will Happen- Bradley Roby - CB
What I Would Do- Demarcus Lawrence - Edge Rusher
The Broncos need help in the secondary with Champ Bailey fighting with father time and Chris Harris having a torn ACL. Roby makes a ton of sense here. On my board Lawrence makes sense to replace Shaun Phillips.
32. Seattle Seahawks
What Will Happen- David Yankey - OG
What I Would Do- Kelvin Benjamin - WR
The Seahawks will look to protect Russell Wilson and take the ‘safe’ pick in Yankey. On the other hand, I’m swinging for the fences and taking the big, speedy Benjamin. He fits what Seattle wants to do and can bail Wilson out when he extends plays.
