Your new savior of the San Diego Chargers secondary is.....Crezdon Butler?
A former teammate of Marcus Gilchrist at Clemson, Crezdon has bounced around the league as a special teams player since being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. In three seasons, Butler has racked up 1 tackle and 1 forced fumble (presumably on the aforementioned tackle). He was cut by the Buffalo Bills after spending training camp with them this season.
Okay, so maybe not a savior. Still, depth!
Butler likely takes the spot as the Chargers' fifth cornerback, behind Derek Cox, Shareece Wright, Richard Marshall and Johnny Patrick.
As for why the team decided to sign Butler to the active roster instead of promoting Marcus Cromartie from the practice squad is beyond me. Perhaps this is a move simply for special teams help and Cromartie isn't very good at that, but special teams looked awfully good in the win against the Eagles on Sunday.
To make room on the roster, the Chargers released defensive lineman Drake Nevis, who was signed the day after final cut day to add depth there.
