The roster moves are flying in from the San Diego Chargers today, just one day after the final roster cut down to 53 players. Here's a run-down of everything that has happened.
Sean Lissemore
Tom Telesco started off his day by trading a conditional 2015 seventh-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for DE Sean Lissemore. Lissemore is a true "space eater" that doesn't get pushed backwards. He is exactly what you want in a backup defensive end if you're running a 3-4 system, which the Chargers are and the Cowboys are not any more after bringing in Monte Kiffin.
Waiver Wire Claims
Drake Nevis, a defensive lineman drafted in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, was claimed by Telesco (who was a part of the Colts' front office that drafted him). He'll replace Brandon Moore, who has potential but probably isn't ready to be on an NFL roster.
Terrell Manning, a fifth round pick by the Green Bay Packers last year that struggled with injuries and other health issues during his rookie season, was claimed to provide depth at the inside linebacker position. He'll replace another former Packer in D.J. Smith.
Reggie Walker
Reggie Walker was a special teams standout in Arizona under Ken Whisenhunt and has been signed by the Chargers after being released by the Cardinals. Kevin Spencer, who is the special teams coach in San Diego, was Walker's special teams coach in Arizona as well. Reggie served as special teams captain for the Cardinals in 2012, although it's doubtful he'll have that same title in San Diego after not being with the team during the preseason.
Practice Squad Additions
Nick Becton, Thomas Keiser and Marcus Cromartie have all been signed to the Chargers practice squad. Offensive tackle, outside linebacker and cornerback are probably the three areas in which the team has the most depth issues, so this should be music to the ears of San Diegans.
Losses
To make room for the new additions to the roster, defensive end Damik Scafe was placed on injured-reserve and will miss the entire season. Also, linebacker D.J. Smith and defensive end Brandon Moore were released.
Summary
It would appear that the team got better at some key positions, and have built a good base for their practice squad this season as well. Another good day for Tom Telesco, it would seem.
