Recap of the Chargers' First Day of Free Agency

The San Diego Chargers made a couple of moves in the first day of free agency, but nothing to get excited about.

With free agents flying off the shelves like bread before a blizzard, the San Diego Chargers didn't do much of anything in Day 1 of NFL Free Agency 2013. Here's the run-down.

Returning Faces

  • Nick Novak, K
  • Mike Windt, LS

New Faces

  • John Phillips, TE
  • King Dunlap, OT
  • Fozzy Whittaker, RB

Players Lost

  • Louis Vasquez, G (Broncos)
  • Antonio Garay, DT/DE (released)
  • Randy McMichael, TE (released)

Is that an exciting first day? No, not really. There are still 3-4 huge holes along the offensive line and the secondary is still empty.

Losing Vasquez hurts a lot, and losing him to the AFC West Champion Denver Broncos hurts even more. Dunlap doesn't seem to be talented enough to be a starter, and also seems like a poor fit for a zone blocking scheme. John Phillips is just a guy, not someone to get excited about.

I know it's just one day, but a lot of NFL teams used that day to get better and the San Diego Chargers were not one of them.

Players that the Chargers have scheduled meetings with, or are at least rumored to be interested in, include former Chiefs Tackle Eric Winston, former Colts Cornerback Jerraud Powers and former Jaguars Cornerback Derek Cox.
