In an attempt to bolster the number of players they have named "John" on the roster, the San Diego Chargers today claimed Cornerback Johnny Patrick off waivers from the New Orleans Saints. Andy Simms broke the story on Twitter:
Client @johnnypatrick32 is headed to the San Diego Chargers. He was claimed on waivers today.

I was going to write here that Patrick was "camp fodder" partially because I love that phrase and partially because he's not a very good player. However, with only 2 CBs on the roster, Patrick has a good chance to make the team as a 4th CB if he can prove in the preseason that he can stay healthy and contribute on Special Teams (probably as a gunner). Oh, also, I believe I called Demorrio Williams "camp fodder" when he was claimed off waivers last year and he definitely made it past camp.
A 3rd round pick in 2011, Patrick played 218 snaps for the Saints in 2012 and came out with an overall grade of -8.2 and a coverage grade of -8.4 (according to Pro Football Focus). Do not expect Patrick to compete for either of the open starting jobs at Cornerback, but don't rule it out either.
