San Diego Chargers: Philip Rivers and Eric Weddle named to Pro Bowl roster

In Mike McCoy's first year as head coach of the San Diego Chargers, two of his players were named to the Pro Bowl roster and five more are listed as alternates.

First, the really good news:

Philip Rivers and Eric Weddle have been named to the Pro Bowl roster in 2013. Rivers is more than deserving, he's been the 2nd best QB in the league this season, but Weddle struggled a bit through the first half of the season. I'd love to say that he made it by being great in the last month or so, but the reality is probably that he made it based on reputation.

I'm okay with that. I'm okay with Weddle making it on reputation this year. The reasons he wasn't insanely good earlier in the season had more to do with the lack of talent around him than anything else. He's still one of the best safeties in the league, and he's shown it since the return of Donald Butler, Jarret Johnson and Melvin Ingram.

Now, the rest:

Antonio Gates (3rd), Nick Hardwick (4th), Le'Ron McClain (4th), Mike Scifres (4th) and Ryan Mathews (6th) made the team as "alternates".

What this means is that Gates gets to go to Hawaii if three of the four TEs actually named to the roster decide to drop out for whatever reason. Same thing for the other guys and whatever number they have in the parenthesis.

Le'Ron McClain made it as an alternate because there just aren't enough guys playing the FB position in the league anymore.

Mike Scifres deserves to be higher, as does Ryan Mathews and Nick Hardwick.
