San Diego Chargers claim DE Lawrence Guy, waive DE Jairus Wynn

The San Diego Chargers look to improve their defensive line, and maybe get a competitive edge, but claiming DT/DE Lawrence Guy off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts.

Jamie Squire

Well, let's look into this Guy.

At 6'4" and 304 lbs, Lawrence Guy is more of the standard 3-4 defensive end than Jairus Wynn was. Guy was drafted in the 7th round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, but never got on the field for them during his rookie season. He landed on the Colts in 2011 and has played in 10 games with them since, started two of them.

This is someone that Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco is very familiar with, and I'm sure that John Pagano talked to his brother Chuck (Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts) about him as well. Interesting, though, that San Diego picked up the ex-Colts player days before playing against the Colts.

I wouldn't be surprised if Guy was being grabbed to play more nose tackle than defensive end for the Chargers. Kwame Geathers has had a disappointing start to his career, and Cam Thomas is struggling now that he's playing full-time. Perhaps Guy could split time with Thomas to create more push in the middle of the line.
