Well, here's an interesting selection.
In the 5th round, Tom Telesco selected Cornerback Steve Williams with the 145th overall selection. It is the Chargers' second consecutive player chosen from the California Golden Bears.
Williams does not have the size to play on the outside. He will not be replacing Antoine Cason or Quentin Jammer. However, he is perfectly suited for the role of Nickel CB and has play-making speed.
The selection of Williams gives San Diego a lot of different options. Marcus Gilchrist can now have his chance on the outside or at Strong Safety. Even if he lands neither of those starting roles, Williams might still be an upgrade over Gilchrist in the Nickel spot.
The Chargers' defensive backfield has lacked a guy with elite speed the last few years, and that is the one thing Williams brings to the table. He will be a valuable and versatile weapon in man-coverage and against the run.
