2012 NFL Power Rankings Consensus: Week 3

Week 3 brings more shakeups as the Cardinals and Seahawks are climbing thanks to surprising victories, while the Saints and Chiefs keep tumbling.

More shakeups! Thankfully the NFL didn't save all the big surprises for week 1 as week 2 saw a few more shocking outcomes. Who would have ever expected the Cardinals could ever knock-off the Patriots in Foxboro? Or the Seahawks completely dominating the Cowboys? Or the Saints dropping to 0-2 at the hands of the Carolina Panthers? Or who expected the Chiefs to be this bad to start the season?

This is the beauty of the NFL: your pre-conceived notions mean nothing. The game is played on the field and what you expect to happen means nothing once the game starts. Now, I said that as kind of a blanket statement, but it does become less and less true as the season goes on.

Heading into this week, this is absolutely the Chargers' "Statement Game." Should they manage to beat the Falcons, this will go a long way to improving their stock. They have already risen quite a bit (you'll see that shortly), but this will make a statement. Maybe not quite as strong a statement as Arizona taking down the Patriots, but it'll solidify the Chargers as a top-10 team.

Notable Quotes

Sports Illustrated

I know I quote SI a lot, but Don Banks is easily the most on-point of all the pundits week-in-and-week-out.

I'm containing my enthusiasm for the Chargers because they've beaten a pair of AFC bottom-feeders in Oakland and Tennessee. But you can't downgrade San Diego too far for getting two Ws and only allowing 24 points in the process. So the Norv Turner Survivor Tour rolls on into Week 3, and a much tougher test awaits this week as red-hot Atlanta pays a visit to Qualcomm Stadium. That should tell us a little bit more about who these Chargers really are.

ProFootballTalk

Yes, they’ve beaten no one. But the fact that the notoriously slow-starting Chargers have charged to 2-0 is big news.

Fox

The Chargers nearly doubled the offensive production of the Titans and that was without two of their biggest weapons in Antonio Gates and Ryan Mathews. The Chargers have historically gotten off to a slow start, but now sitting at 2-0, it may be time to take them seriously again.

Reddit

Run plays up the gut were designed for players like Jackie Battle. Luckily, Norv Turner realized the Chargers have a Jackie Battle and put him in late in the game. Dominant clock management, Dante Rosario, and a relentless defensive performance put this game in the win column. First 2-0 start since 06!

Division Averages

Division Avg Ranking
NFC East 11.9306
NFC West 13.9167
NFC North 14.5000
AFC North 15.9861
NFC South 16.2500
AFC East 17.6944
AFC West 19.9444
AFC South 21.7778

So the NFC is becoming the powerhouse conference in the NFL now as the top 3 divisions are NFC divisions, and the AFC occupies the bottom 3 positions. As you'll see later, the only thing keeping the AFC West out of the cellar is the Chargers and Broncos being ranked higher. Get it together Kansas City and Oakland!

Stock Rising

PHI 11.308 6.286 5.022
MIA 30.923 26.571 4.352

Observations:

  • The Chargers are on the move!
  • It's no surprise that the 2-0 Cardinals, coming off a huge upset of New England, have risen the most.
  • Should the Chargers knock off the Falcons, I can't wait to see how much more they'd climb.
  • Maybe it was a bit early to completely write off Miami in Week 1
  • You'll see shortly, this likely won't be the last time we see Seattle on this list

TEN 23.539 27.643 -4.104

Observations:

  • EVERYONE OFF THE NEW ORLEANS BANDWAGON!
  • It's no surprise the Chiefs are slipping this quickly, they have looked awful in the first two games. And as you'll see in a bit, they likely haven't hit rock-bottom yet.
  • Glad to see the Chargers were able to knock Tennessee into the "Stock Falling" list

Observations:

  • Well that didn't take long. The 49ers are your unanimous pick for the best team in the NFL.
  • Even though the NFC dominates the divisional rankings, interestingly enough the top 12 teams are evenly split between the NFC and AFC.
  • But, AFC teams occupy all of the bottom-5 spots this week. Way to bring the class down, fellas.
  • Though the Browns lost again this week, they actually moved up slightly, but only to make room for the Jaguars.

  • The Texans aren't too far behind at that 2nd-best spot
  • The Ravens are slowly settling into the number-6 spot
  • Chargers are on the move this week, but not everyone is convinced
  • There are a few die-hards in there holding onto that hope that the Saints aren't that bad. The Saints are ranked anywhere from 12th down to 24th; that's quite a swing!

Observations:

  • I'll be the first to admit: it's kind of hard to compare these numbers to last week's as the sources have changed each week
  • Even though it's labeled "DVOA", that ranking actually uses Football Outsider's DAVE rating. I should fix that ...
  • Right now, DAVE relies on 75% pre-season projections to rank teams. That's why the 49ers are still ranked 13th over at Football Outsiders, but 4-or-better at the other sites.
  • Most of the Objective rankings take until about Week 4 before there's enough data to objectively portray a team's play accurately
  • That all said, the Chargers have climbed slightly this week in the Objective rankings, even though they've only taken out "lesser" opponents

  • That's crazy, all 4 of the worst-ranked teams overall also happen to have the lowest Standard Deviation, meaning the consensus is there that they're all terrible.
  • Who breaks that trend? The Chargers! They're one of the more consistently-ranked teams
  • Remember me talking about that DAVE ranking? Well it seems to be holding Arizona down as FBO has them ranked 30th, yet the other sites much higher. Same story for Seattle.
  • The inverse is true for New Orleans and Carolina

Browns 30.857 27.250 29.054 -0.554 Falling
Jaguars 31.143 31.000 31.071 -2.776 Falling

Observations:

  • The top-12 hasn't changed too much here
  • Seattle jumps quite a bit, buoyed by their Objective rankings. Same story in Miami
  • The Jets are being dragged back down by their Subjective rankings. Jumping ship already.

Observations:

  • You would be confident in saying the Jaguars, Raiders and Chiefs are not very good teams right now
  • You could be just as confident in saying the Steelers, Ravens and Eagles are actually pretty good teams right now
  • The Cardinals and Seahawks being at the bottom of this list is no surprise. There are some pundits still holding on to their perception of these teams, but the numbers say otherwise. Also, see: Outsiders, Football
  • The Chargers fall right around the middle. So they're kind of consistantly-ranked, ish.

Observations:

  • The Giants bounce back and win their second game and all of a sudden everyone is back on board. Not so fast, maybe? This is a fickle bunch.
  • Based on past coverage I've seen, it seems like the media has been wanting the Texans to be good for quite a while now. In this instance, it seems like they're hyping them up a little bit too much still. Either that or the objective rankings haven't caught up to them yet.
  • The media this year seems to feel slighted by the Chargers. Any early success is met with skepticism with a sense of, "we've trusted you before, we don't believe you anymore." Hopefully they can prove everyone wrong this week and dominate the Falcons.
  • Kansas City, based on the numbers, is playing even worse than perceived. They have a little bit more to fall.
  • Miami and Seattle, though they're at opposite corners of the country share one thing in common: they get no respect. Rodney Dangerfield says hello (from the grave).
