The San Diego Chargers' search for a backup running to pair with Ryan Mathews looks like it may be drawing to a close. Former Chiefs RB, Jackie Battle, met with team officials and toured the facility this afternoon (according to UT San Diego reporter, Michael Gehlken). The 28 year old, Battle, is thought to be one of four potential targets of General Manager A.J. Smith to replace the recently departed Mike Tolbert.
Battle posted an unspectacular 597 yards on 159 carries last season with the Kansas City Chiefs and isn't a great threat in the passing game. However, he is a solid pass blocker and that has been a noted weakness of Mathews' in seasons past. If signed, Battle would be the second Chiefs running back to change sides this off season following new fullback Le'Ron McClain to San Diego. Battle is also a very solid special teams performer.
Either the Chargers are more impressed with Battle's ability to carry the ball than I am or this is a signal that Mathews will receive a greater share of the team's carries than in past season. Tell us what you think about this potential acquisition in the comments.
