NFL: Week 4 knee-jerk reactions - staff
The Chargers believe in Mathews, but they want him to be held accountable. He responded to his benching by gaining some tough yards late in the game. Mathews remains a work in progress and the Chargers will push buttons when necessary.

That's 117 net yards and eight first downs (including a touchdown) in 13 dropbacks. In the rest of the game, he was 10-of-13 for 107 yards, with one DPI, one interception, three sacks, and one fumble. That's 91 net yards and four first downs (including another touchdown) in 17 dropbacks.

The same playing-time percentages are not found at the cornerback position, where just three (3) players have not missed a snap. That short list is comprised of Tim Jennings (Chicago Bears), Cortland Finnegan (St. Louis Rams) and Antoine Cason, who is in his contract year with the San Diego Chargers.
