One player to watch: Week 1 - Bill Williamson
Ryan Mathews, running back: The Chargers are looking for dividends from the No. 12 overall pick in the 2010 draft. Mathews has looked good in the preseason. He will share carries with Mike Tolbert, but San Diego would like Mathews to set the tone, starting Sunday against the visiting Minnesota Vikings. If Mathews can have a big first game, that will give the coaching staff a bunch of confidence in him moving forward.

Ranking AFC West backup QBs - Bill Williamson
1. Billy Volek, San Diego: The Chargers have the best quarterback in the division in Philip Rivers and they have the best backup as well. It is not even close. Volek has shown he can help the Chargers win the past (the 2007 playoffs) and the team is confident in him if Rivers goes down.

49ers claim QB Tolzien off waivers - Cam Inman
Scott Tolzien’s last pass of the exhibition season was for a touchdown Thursday against the 49ers. His next pass apparently will be for the 49ers. Multiple outlets are reporting the 49ers have claimed Tolzien, an undrafted rookie out of Wisconsin who was released Saturday by the San Diego Chargers.
