Butler is the only player on this list yet to take an NFL snap, owing to a torn Achilles tendon that ended his rookie year before it started. Heading into last year, the third-round pick was talked about as a potential starter at inside linebacker, which has been a troublesome position for the Chargers to fill over the past few seasons. The team could use his David Harris-style play against the run, and while the Achilles tear might slow him down at the beginning of the season, don't be surprised if he's starting by the end of the year.

Chargers sign three draft choices -
The San Diego Chargers signed three of their eight draft selections from the 2011 NFL draft: LB Jonas Mouton(second round), T Stephen Schilling (sixth round) and LB Andrew Gachkar (seventh round).  All three players signed four-year contracts.

Late AFC West notes - Bill Williamson
The Chargers re-signed outside linebacker Antwan Barnes. He is a good situational pass rusher who has some solid ability.

Chargers back off Burnett - Kevin Acee
The Chargers have essentially spent $49 million on their defense in the past 24 hours -- $40 million to safety Eric Weddle (five years, $19 million guaranteed) and $9 million (three years, $3 million guaranteed) to linebacker Takeo Spikes.
