The Chargers shocked the draft again Friday evening by trading up in the third round and using the pick to select Washington linebacker Donald Butler.
Why I love AJ Smith - Tosten Burks
I don’t have analysis to offer, just admiration. Following an AJ Smith draft is fun as shiz.

What he brings: We believe Butler has more athleticism than first-rounder Rolando McClain. At 245 pounds, Butler is light on his feet and covers a lot of ground with a wide range. However, Butler however, lacks the same instincts and sometimes is undisciplined with his run fits.
How he fits: San Diego needed size and power down the middle of its defense. Stephen Cooper and Brandon Siler play the game with heart and soul, but Butler possesses the natural physical qualities that fit the Chargers' defense better. He will need time to prove he can overtake either of them.

Butler has his game on an upswing and has moved up draft boards the past seven months. He plays bigger and faster than his size/speed numbers, and he would be effective as a run-defending middle linebacker but also shows enough coverage skills to be placed on the outside. Offers a good degree of upside potential and is a solid developmental prospect who will eventually see action on the next level.
