BFTB Scouting: College Bowl Games Part 6 (New Year's Eve)

Featured Game
Hyundai Sun Bowl
Notre Dame
(7-5) vs Miami (7-5) Friday 12/31 11:00 AM PT (CBS)

These two teams used to meet regularly in the 1980s and 1990s in big time games with national title hopes on the line. However, what was once Lou Holtz and Jimmy Johnson is now 1st year Fighting Irish Coach Brian Kelly and Interim Hurricanes Head Coach Jeff Stoutland. They also both have their issues at the Quarterback position. Notre Dame lost Junior Dan Crist and Miami's Junior QB Jacory Harris missed time after struggling early in the season. Notre Dame has tapped Freshman Tommy Rees to start after he won the final 3 games of the season for them and Miami is as of yet undecided as to whether Harris starts or they go with Freshman Stephen Morris. Notre Dame is also missing TE Kyle Rudolph who has 1st round potential, RB Armando Allen who was a late round possibility in this year's draft and possibly DT Ian Williams who at one point people saw as a 2nd round pick.

On the positive side, the game features two of college's best WRs. Notre Dame Junior Michael Floyd will give his freshman plenty of help, but will also have to match up against a potential first round pick in Miami Junior CB Brandon Harris. For Miami they'll try to get the ball to Senior WR Leonard Hankerson who has been a touchdown and first down machine this season. Miami also has some other talented receivers, such as Junior Travis Benjamin, but none of them are as reliable as Hankerson.

Notre Dame is coming off of 3 game win streak where the beat USC and a then 15th ranked Utah team to get to this game. Miami is off two losses to bowl bound teams. Both teams will look forward to standing on the shoulders of giants and renewing this rivalry. Miami is probably the more talented team (as you'll see in the scouting reports below) and if motivated should prevail.

BFTB Scouting Targets:
Player School Pos. Class Height Weight
Michael Floyd
Notre Dame WR Jr. 6'3 215 lbs
Floyd is a tall receiver with good hands and who knows how to use that big body to get position. He's been very productive against top competition. The two knocks on him are his speed, which is not great but good for his size, and some injury issues, which continued into his Junior year. He's looking like a potential 3rd round pick, but I've seen mocks where they have him higher. He might stay in school to help his draft stock. Original Writeup
Allen Bailey
Miami
DE Sr. 6'3 287 lbs
Mentioned as tweener between DE and DE, which could mean a team could develop him as a 3-4 DE. He's a good pass rusher that gets out of his stance quick and can use his hands, size, quickness and power in a variety of pass rushing moves to get penetration. Good run defender and will pursue plays past the point of attack with aggressiveness.
Brandon Harris
Miami CB
Jr. 5'10 193 lbs
On the small end when looking at ideal cornerback size, but big enough. Doesn't seem to get a lot of big plays or interceptions, but he's a solid coverage corner. Son of a high school football coach. Likely 1st or 2nd round pick. Original Writeup
Orlando Franklin Miami OT/OG Sr. 6'6 318 lbs
At the start of this season it looked like Franklin was going to be one of the top LTs in this draft. As the season has gone he's proven to most scouts that he's a better fit for guard than tackle. His stock has also slipped from 1st rounder to 2nd rounder. That may be low enough for the Chargers to take a shot and try to develop him as an RT or move him to RG and replace the suddenly injury prone Louis Vazquez. Original Writeup
Colin McCarthy Miami LB Sr. 6'2 240 lbs
Doesn't pick up sacks from the OLB position, but good in run support or zone coverage. Has good instincts for the position. I think he could transition to ILB and play special teams. Graded as a 3rd round pick. Original Writeup
Leonard Hankerson
Miami WR Sr. 6'2 213 lbs
He can make great catches and can hold onto the ball in traffic. His speed and size are assets when throwing deep. Scouts knock his hands, but he always came off to me as the most reliable pass catcher on his team. My take: take him in the 4th round or later, coach him up and you have a stud. Original Writeup
Graig Cooper
Miami RB Sr. 6'0 208 lbs
Was mentioned as a 1st or 2nd round pick before knee injury in Miami's 2009 Bowl Game set him back. Spent most of this season trying to come back. If he regains his previous form he could be a later round steal. He's got nice size for the position, he's very competitive, a hard worker, has quick feet and has a good feel for finding holes.

Meineke Car Care Bowl: South Florida vs. Clemson
BFTB Scouting Targets:
Player School Pos. Class Height Weight
DeAndre McDaniel
Clemson S Sr. 6'0 216 lbs
His stock may be slipping, but I like this guy. He's been very productive in college and has good size and speed for the position. Scouts worry about stiffness in the hips. I like that he's an exceptional run defender while also being a playmaker in the passing game (at least at the collegiate level he is). Some past character concerns but, has been a good citizen for the last couple years. 3rd round pick possibility with 2nd round potential. Original Writeup
Chris Hairston
Clemson OT Sr. 6'6 321 lbs
Has shown the ability to improve a lot over his career. Big string offensive tackle who can move people in the run game. He's got long arms and can hold a block, which helps in pass defense, but can get beat by speed rushers. 3rd round pick material.
Marcus Gilchrist Clemson CB Sr. 5'10 193 lbs
Most likely just a prospect for Nickel DB at the next level, but possibly could be coached up. He's got some good instincts, excellent speed, great football intelligence, durability and a willingness and skill to help in run support. Returns kicks as well. 3rd or 4th round pick. Original Writeup
Jarvis Jenkins Clemson DE/DT Sr. 6'4 303 lbs
Well sized for the 3-4 DE. His strength is versus the run. Good a getting penetration and making big hits. Looks like a 4th round pick.
Craig Marshall South Florida DE/OLB Sr. 6'4 262 lbs
Appears athletic enough to be a 3-4 rush linebacker. His best move is a power rush where he can knock offensive lineman back with his initial punch. He uses his hands well. His speed is decent. Okay in pursuit, but could use work. 4th or 5th round pick.
NFL Prospects:
Player School Pos. Class Height Weight
Da'Quan Bowers Clemson DE Jr. 6'4 280 lbs
Easy top 10 pick. Burst onto the scene this year with an extremely productive year will tons of sacks, tackles for losses, forced fumbles, etc. He could play 3-4 DE, but he'll be gone before the Chargers pick. Someone will use him as an edge rusher than can move inside on passing downs and disrupt offenses. Original Writeup
Terrell McClain South Florida DT Sr. 6'1 298 lbs
Too small to play in the 3-4, but would be a penetrator in the Tampa-2 or other 4-3 defenses. Could go as high as the 2nd round.

BFTB Scouting Targets:
Player School Pos. Class Height Weight
Justin Houston
Georgia DE/OLB Jr. 6'3 254 lbs
Plays DE for Georgia, but looks like a fit for a 3-4 rush linebacker. He's been very productive in his Junior campaign picking up lots of tackle for loss, sacks and quarterback hurries. It could be enough for him to declare and get in the discussion as a late first rounder or early second rounder.
Clint Boling Georgia OT/OG Sr. 6'4 304 lbs
Big versatile offensive lineman. 4 year starter who set the record at Georgia for games played. Looks like he could be a 3rd rounder. Like I said with Orlando Franklin, that may be low enough for the Chargers to take a shot and try to develop him as an RT or move him to RG and replace the suddenly injury prone Louis Vazquez.
NFL Prospects:
Player School Pos. Class Height Weight
A.J Green Georgia WR Jr. 6'4 208 lbs
The top WR prospect in this year's draft. He has all the physical abilities and football skills to be a Pro Bowl caliber wideout in the NFL. He proved his worth multiple times against some of the top secondaries in the SEC and in the nation. He came through in the clutch and with spectacular catches. He's very strong an routinely could push defenders out of the way with a stiff. Covering him one-on-one even at the next level could be costly. Easy top 10 pick. Original Writeup
Brandon Boykin Georgia CB Jr. 5'10 183 lbs
Durable cornerback who is slightly undersized and lacks the ideal top end speed to compensate for it. He his athletic, has fluid hips and is by no means too slow to at least survive at the position. He can also be physical and has the SEC mentality where he'll help out in run support.

Chick-fil-A Bowl: South Carolina vs. Florida State
BFTB Scouting Targets:
Player School Pos. Class Height Weight
Cliff Matthews
South Carolina
DE/OLB
Sr. 6'4 263 lbs
A guy with a good motor who has good skills for getting after the passer. He plays with his hand on the ground in college and that exposes his lack of strength against blockers. His main assets are his hands, feet and determination, which will work better as a OLB. He's also got a good spin move. He's a little stiff though so he's not ideal for dropping into coverage. He's got good football smarts and can sniff out screens and draws. He's a hard worker and a team captain dating back to his junior campaign. Original Writeup
Jarriel King
South Carolina OT Sr. 6'5 308 lbs
Not the quickest afoot so he could be in line to become a RT at the next level. His skills need polishing and probably couldn't start right away. He's very strong, but scouts question whether has the mean streak to be competitive at the next level. Possible 4th round pick.
Markus White
Florida St.
DE/OLB
Sr. 6'3 253 lbs
A defensive leader and a force in the pass rush. Plays DE, but may have skills to translate to OLB. Late round semi-sleeper pick.
NFL Prospects:
Player School Pos. Class Height Weight
Rodney Hudson
Florida St.
C/OG Sr. 6'2 277 lbs
Barely recruited out of high school, Hudson's work ethic is what propelled him to being called one of the best offensive lineman in FSU history. His awareness, pass blocking, run blocking and on-field communication skills all get the highest marks. Original Writeup
Christian Ponder Florida St. QB Sr. 6'2 221 lbs
The best qualities about Ponder are that he's mobile and tough (mentally and physically). His weaknesses have been telegraphing throws, forcing the ball, not finding secondary receivers, scrambling too early, etc. Scouts see the raw talent there, it just has to be molded. Looking like he could go in the 3rd round or later. Original Writeup
