Forney appears to be set at RG
Having already missed a week of practice with a sprained left foot, Vasquez will have even less time to make an impression. So it seems doubtful he could overtake veteran Kynan Forney, who is having a tremendous camp. "He had his best practice when things got speeded up," Turner said of Forney. "He's very physical and has very good athletic ability."
Rookie's goal: Make Chargers say, 'We've got to keep this guy'
Charly Martin signed with the Chargers partly because the team's top three wide receivers (Vincent Jackson, Chris Chambers and Malcom Floyd) are scheduled to be free agents next season. And because he knew his chances of making an NFL roster depended on his ability to play special teams, he nagged the West Texas coaches into letting him see some action there last season.
Gates: Injury-plagued '08 a 'blessing' - AFC West - ESPN
"For the first time, I really got into the mental part of the game. I never had to before," Gates said. "But I couldn't be productive last year the way I was productive before ... I just couldn't run faster and jump higher than people. I had to become a smarter player ... I've heard guys resort to that in their mid-30s. But I had to do it early ... And I'm glad I did. It made me a better player. It was a blessing."
San Diego Chargers Seek Fans to Film Public Service Announcement | Yacht Vacations & Charters
"Giving fans the opportunity to be the voice of the Responsibility Has Its Rewards campaign personalizes the 'Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk' message," said Jill Pepper, executive director of TEAM Coalition. "Teamwork is exactly what this campaign is all about, and through this program we are demonstrating that when everyone -- including the fans -- takes responsibility, everyone wins."
Chargers keeping local options on table
In San Diego, Fabiani continues to meet with the Mayor's Office and the City Attorney's Office to give updates on the Chargers' search and toss around ideas. Fabiani said whenever he discusses possible sites with anyone, a downtown stadium comes up. "It's the first thing people talk about," he said. "You tell them what you're working on, and everyone asks about downtown."
Chargers New Media Roundtable
I had a great time discussing whether LT should play in the preseason, if the Chargers should run the Wildcat formation and how the NFL should fix local TV blackouts with Craig and Chris from 619sports. Check it out and let me know if you like what you hear, because I plan on doing more of this in the future if it get's a good reception.
San Francisco 49ers 17 - Denver Broncos 16 - Kyle Orton struggles in preseason debut - Mile High Report
I said prior to the game that I was going to watch the quarterbacks to see if their footwork was right. To see if there were reacting, making quick decisions. Kyle Orton did none of these things. He had happy feet all night. He looked like a player that was thinking instead of playing and reacting. Part of that could be fact that Orton is still learning the offense. Part of it was Kyle Orton making poor decisions and poor throws. I got the feeling Josh McDaniels threw a little bit of everything at Kyle Orton to get a sense, both physically and mentally, of where he is with the playbook. Test failed.
Post-Game Thread: Preseason Week 1 - Dallas vs. Oakland - Silver And Black Pride
It was nice to see Russell have a good two-drive game, going 6/9 for 50 yards. Russell's favorite target was obviously Chaz Schilens, who caught 5 balls for 52 yards and also set up a big defensive pass interference call with another pass attempt. I was surprised that Zach Miller's number wasn't called even once. I guess the Raiders already know they have that connection in their pocket whenever they need it. The running game looked alright, even though Fargas' only touch was to get stuffed in the red zone (he won't be there in the regular season). As expected, McFadden and Bush looked much more dynamic and will take a lot of touches away from Fargas this season. Also, except for the one sack, the offensive line looked pretty solid, even without Robert Gallery.
