San Diego Wasting No Time Reshaping Roster
The San Diego Chargers are already making changes to the roster for next year, and in a big way. The team appears to be cleaning house. This is evident especially by the moves to not resign Vincent Jackson and the talks of several veteran players being asked to restructure contracts to free up salary cap space. It seems that the Chargers are going all in for next season with some risky roster moves. It seems that the team is willing to take a high risk high reward approach to next season. It should make for an interesting off-season. To give you an idea as to just a few of the changes.....
1) San Diego appears prepared to cut tackle Marcus McNeill. Mcneill also held out in 2010 for a better contract. He has twice been selected to the Pro Bowl, but missed time this year due to a neck injury. He has only played in 20 of the 32 games over the last two years. Expect San Diego to move quickly to sign Jared Gaither to be the starting left tackle (a job he excelled at last season).
2) Vincent Jackson, who has been asking for big money for the last two years, is once again a free agent. The Chargers were not interested in giving him that long-term contract for the last two years and it seems the team doesn't want to at this point either. Too many teams are in need of a high caliber receiver, and the list of free agents makes Jackson much easier to replace. In the end, this seems to be a decision that works out well for both parties. Jackson gets his money, and San Diego keeps valuable cap space as they rebuild the roster. There is certainly still a chance that the Chargers resign him, but I think this marriage is done.
3) Turner officially announced that Darrell Stuckey is expected to start at strong safety next year. Goodbye Steve Gregory. Stuckey stood out on special teams and has earned a shot to start. I am excited to see how this kid performs.
4) Several veterans may be asked to restructure their contracts to free up cap space. This list is rumored to include DE Luis Castillo and ILB Takeo Spikes. If either of these two refuse, and San Diego cuts either of them, the Chargers will have some serious holes to fill. Guard Kris Dielman may have the same situation presented to him. It does look like the team expects Dielman to play, but expect the team to look for some insurance either through the draft or free-agency.
Turner and Smith appear to be going all out to make this team a contender again. The only thing that is for certain is that it will be a busy off-season for the Chargers.
What's the difference? (A question for fellow Boltheads)
To be honest, I don't get it. I'm not trying to be a smart a** or sarcastic, but I really don't get it. What is the big difference between a team, lets say the Giants, and the Bolts. QB's? Naw, i really believe Rivers is the equal of Manning (or any other QB) in the league. Sure, he had a not so great year, but lets face it, Manning (and Brady for that matter) have had valleys as well as peaks in their careers. Manning had a pretty rocky first half of this past season and ended up winning the SB. Receivers? Come on, we have some of the best in the NFL. RB's? Mathews and Tolbert are a very potent duo that can match up with anyone. Our defense has proved questionable at times, but was/is talented enough to at least keep us in the hunt and did get better towards the end of the season.
Coaching?........well, thats a matter of opinion, but Norv has proven that he can win games and is better than alot of the coaches out there. The bench? There lies a major problem. We have no depth at alot of positions, but checking out both the Patriots and Giants, their bench isn't exactly crammed with five star talent either. Injuries? We got hit hard this past season and I'll admit, that certainly contributes to a bad year, but doesn't every team in the NFL have to deal with injuries?
So with all that the Bolts have going for them, why do we drop further and further back every year? Why aren't we considered an 'elite' team anymore. What is the difference between the top ten teams in the league, and us? Again, I'm not trying to be a sarcastic a**, but I see all the good stuff that the Bolts have and I see what other teams have, and I can't understand why we don't have a few of those big silver trophies in a glass case down at Bolts HQ. Just an honest question.
Hello Chargers Fans, some questions from an outsider
Howdy Chargers fans, I'm from Gang Green Nation, the Jets blog, I come in peace and mean no hostility whatsoever, i'll just say that right now. Anyway, for some reason I was kind of upset that the Chargers didn't win the AFC West this year, since I would've liked to see them in the playoffs. Not too sure why, maybe I just like the SoCal area. Anyway, if you guys don't mind I have a few questions for y'all.
-Do you guys expect to have back Vincent Jackson and Mike Tolbert? they seem like good contributors that i would imagine you guys would miss.
-Speaking of running backs, do you think AJ is gonna draft a Darren sproles-type back, because i heard Philip really missed him.
-Why Exactly was Norv on the hotseat this season? Doesn't he have the best win % in the franchise history and doesn't Dean Spanos like him? I can kinda understand why AJ was on the hotseat since he's apparently made some questionable draft picks the past couple of years. Are you guys happy to have these two back?
-Where are you guys looking to go in the draft? Pass rusher? Offensive line? receiver? Defensive line?
-How have some of AJ's more recent draft picks like Ryan Mathews, Donald Butler, Antoin Cason, and Larry English worked out in your eyes?
-Are you guys thinking about bringing back LT? Quite frankly, most of us Jets faithful don't expect him back, and don't think he really even wants to come back. We have a young, fast back on the roster who's probably gonna take over his third-down-back role next year.
-Do you guys remember Brian Schottenheimer? I think the was Drew Brees' old QB coach with you guys, and he was recently our OC. We couldn't be happier to see him gone, but did you guys also dislike him?
-Why was Marty fired after going 14-2 in 06?
That's about all I can think of. If you have any questions about the Jets, feel free to ask, i'm happy to answer. Let's hope that we can both make the playoffs next year and that we don't get in each others' way too much, even though we play each other.
7 round mock draft prediction
This a Mock draft for the Chargers and it might not be perfect but this looks preety solid if you ask me. All of the players look like they come in and make an immediate impact, even if that means special teams or starting position. Of course a player like Courtney Upshaw can come in and basically have starting position waiting for him but the rest of these players can help the Chargers in a big way.
1. Courtney Upshaw-OLB-Alabama
2.Zebrie Sanders-OT-Florida State
3.Casey Hayward-CB-Vanderbilt
4. Harrison Smith-S-Notre Dame
5.Juron Criner-WR-Arizona
6.William Vlachos-G-Alabama
7.Sean Cattouse-S-California
SUPER BOWL XLVI!!!!!!
Super bowl 46 or should i say 42 is upon us and i want to know who you think is going to win. Personally I think the giants are going to win. With the winning steak they're on I think they're unstoppable. Now don't tell me that the patriots are on a bigger winning streak because i know that. Tom is not as hot as Eli is right now.
Now do you think the chargers are going to win the super bowl within 10 years? I say they make it but sadly they lose.
My Chargers 2012 Draft Predictions
Well this may be a shot in the dark but I have been scouring the internet and looking at lots of film and this is what I have come up with for the Chargers draft picks. I would love to hear your opinion on my picks and also would like to hear what your picks might be. Thank you.
First Round- Courtney Upshaw OLB (Alabama)
Second Round- Marvin McNutt WR (Iowa)
Third Round- Coby Fleener TE (Stanford)
Fourth Round- Blake DeChristopher OT (Virgina Tech)
Fifth Round- T.Y. Hilton WR/KR/PR (FIU)
Sixth Round- Ben Bojicic OC (Bowling Green)
Seventh Round- Kellen Moore QB (Boise State)
May swap the second and third round picks (wasn't sure about those two)
Are the Chargers as good as they are going to get?
Are the Chargers as good as they are going to get under this regime? I fear the window is closing and closing fast. The Chargers were once one of the younger, more talented teams in the NFL and now? Well, now they are not. I feel the blame lies soley on poor management decisions. I think (or I thought) that is time for a change but Mr. Spanos canned that idea because the cup is "half full". In one fan's opinion we are in for more of the same next year.....Mediocrity. So, next fall, sit back, turn the tv on, crack a beer and watch the game. After the game, take your anti-depression medication and wait until next week for more of the same. As you can tell I am a little disappointed in this franchise and I have been a huge fan of the Chargers since I was 3 years old (my wife hates sundays). I would love to hear your thoughts and how you feel about sitting at home and watching the playoffs without seeing the Chargers once again.
Comedic Offensive Coordinator Possibilities
Brian Schottenheimer - A chip off the old block. The embattled New York Jets OC who would only leave if he got a head coaching job elsewhere was quickly dumped for the prolific offensive dynamo that is Tony Sparano. Would be sure to placate those Bolt fans that believe Marty should never have been fired. Not.
Hue Jackson - The Raider head coach who couldn't get his team motivated enough to show up to beat the Chargers for a fourth straight time. Seemed buddy-buddy with Norv sharing the "I survived working for skeletor" in common but did help jump start a moribund offense. Trade for Carson Palmer for 1st and 2nd was always questionable.
Todd Haley - Ex-Chiefs HC who earned his stripes coaching the offense of the Cardinals into the Superbowl. I actually think he is underrated and would be a great fit. Like Hue would have McDaniels-like insider knowledge of the personnel of a divisional rival.
Of course, none of these people will be hired because that would mean a fresh face and voice to the Chargers F.O. which believes that if ain't broke (too bad) don't fix it. Norv will call the plays (the same ones for the past 20 years), AJ will continue to reach for projects, and the OC will be a figurehead. Bolts 2012 - destination Superbowl.
Free Agents We Should Target
QB: Brady Quinn- (if he's cheap) I feel he can be a capable backup behind Rivers for years to come. He could benefit from watching an elite QB day in and day out.
RB: Ronnie Brown- I think he would be an upgrade over Tolbert if we let him walk. He's versatile and can teach Matthews a few things, since Matthews never had a veteran RB to learn from coming in to the NFL.
WR: Reggie Wayne- He is a good route runner and wasn't as productive this year without Manning. He would be a good slot WR and would be able to mentor Vincent Brown (since they are around the same size and have the same skill set)
TE: Kellen Davis- Was used more as a blocker with Mike Martz offense, but I believe he can be a good receiving threat. He is an upgrade over McMichael IMO. Can learn a lot from Gates.
S: Tom Zbikowski- I believe he would be a good compliment to Weddle. Good at stopping the run and got to learn from one of the best safeties in the league (Ed Reed).
Raiders to L.A.?
Recent rumblings out of Oakland point to the fact that if one team goes to the City of Angels, it will be the Raiders. Son of Al has stated openly that the current digs of the team are one notch above a toxic dump (which it is) and that the only thing needed to have him packing his bags is for AEG to sweeten the deal a bit. He has also been in talks with the 49'rs on a way to share their soon to be built new stadium, but both the Niners and the NFL have said that the logistics involved would make that scenario pretty unlikely.
So, is Mr. Davis Jr. serious about moving or is it just a threat to get a new stadium? I think he's very, very serious and I also think that the Raiders will once again become The Los Angeles Raiders as soon as 2013. While Oakland is the heart and soul of the Da Raiders, it isn't the wallet, and in the ego and money driven world of the NFL, big, fancy new stadiums equate to big incomes and future Super Bowls, which the Oakland Coliseum will never, ever see. Big Al didn't care but Little Al does. As for the Chargers, I look to see a deal for a new stadium/convention center to be finalized this year.
