It was reported earlier this week that the former Miami Dolphin safety/cornerback was scheduled to visit San Diego today. Well, today arrived as did Jimmy Wilson and now he's a member of the San Diego Chargers. At this point in time, we know the length of the deal (two years) but not the dollar value.
Wilson's versatility is his biggest selling point and the initial expectation has to be that he will slide into the Marcus Gilchrist role of sometime strong safety, sometime nickel corner. It's possible that Wilson will be better loved than Gilchrist was during his tenure, but early returns from watching the former Dolphin's film suggests that he is a less than exceptional tackler. That is not a great quality in a safety/nickel, but hopefully he can bring enough to the table for the Chargers and Chargers fans to overlook (or at least live with) this failing.
Certainly, the fact that Tom Telesco inked Wilson to a multi-year deal suggests that Wilson's total package is worth it. Let us know what you think of the signing in the comments below.
UPDATE: this deal looks even better now that we have some of the contact details. Feel free to be excited about how this free agency period is playing out, Chargers fans.
