The Defensive Backs, Who Will Make the Cut?

With training camp upon us, I thought it would be interesting to look at the defensive backs and see who makes the cut. Last year the Chargers had 9 defensive backs to start the year (source.)

This years group looks much more talented than last years, with the addition of Brandon Flowers, the drafting of 1st rounder Jason Verrett, the return of injured rookie Steve Williams and the quickly acceding Jahleel Addae. Though it could vary, I am going to use 9 as the cutoff number.

The Locks:

1. Eric Weddle - One of the best in the league (Definitely the best beard)

2. Brandon Flowers - Newly signed, expected to be the #1 corner

3. Jason Verrett - Expected to compete with Wright for #2 corner

4. Shareece Wright - Has had his struggles but showed vast improvement last year, I expect him to lock down the #2 spot

5. Jaheel Addae - Hard hitting safety the team loves

Likely to make it:

6. Marcus Gilchrist - Versatile player expected to compete with Addae for starting SS spot (I expect Addae to win it handily)

7.Darrell Stuckey - Extremely good special teams player who has shown he may have a place on the defensive side of the ball.

8. Richard Marshall - #2 corner last year, expected to compete for a roster spot backing up the starters

9. Brandon Ghee - A young, talented player the Bolts signed from Cincinnati, has a lot of upside let's see if he can tap it

10. Steve Williams - 5th round pick in 2013, the speedster was injured last year and missed his rookie season, he has looked like he belongs so far according to reports, but there is a question of whether there are enough spots on the roster.

It will likely come down to Williams, Ghee and Marshall for the last couple of spots on the roster.

Fighting for a spot:

10. Adrian Phillips - UDFA looking to land a spot

11. Alden Darby - Impressive rookie who reminds some of Addae from last year, practice squad contender?

12. Marcus Cromartie - Practice squad last year, trying to make the team

13. Crezdon Butler - Hasn't shown much in his limited time

14. Chris Davis - Famous from the Iron bowl last year when he beat Alabama on a returned missed field goal for a TD as time expired, showed he can help on special teams which could factor him into making the team.

15. Craig Ducre - UDFA trying to make the squad

It's nice to compare this years list to last years, it has improved greatly thanks to TT and co, I look forward to watching the competition in training camp and the preseason games this year.
