I know it's too early to determine the final roster given the competition during training camp and the preseason. These are the players I believe that have the best chance of cracking the 53 man roster for our team: (The starters will have an asterisk on their name)
Kellen Clemens is an emergency back up who could win games and I believe this coaching staff still likes to develop Sorensen, given that they haven't even taken an interest on other quarterbacks in the draft.
Running Backs (3)
I don't think Marion Grice can crack this roster with his speed and limited ability. His touchdowns were mostly from good blocking I saw on film, not much his own ability to break tackles.
Wide Receivers (6)
The staff seems to be banking on Floyd's healing progress seeing as they didn't draft a wide receiver high. Tevin Reese's elite speed and good production on tape could separate him from the other prospects. One prospect I'm rooting for is Brelan Chancellor incase Floyd can't recover from his injury, Brelan could help our mediocre return game.
Tight Ends (3)
Johnson provides better blocking and had better production compared to John Philips. The future is Ladarius Green but this position is really thin given Gates' injury history.
Offensive Line (9)
I know people want the Chargers to cut Clary because of his inflated contract (he needs to take a pay cut). The one thing he brings in the line is his versatility and leadership. We have an injury prone left tackle and Clary gives us an option to slide Fluker to the left side in case of emergency. On the right guard position, I am banking on Chris Watt to win and eventually replace Clary. If we cut Clary I could see us keeping Willy Smith as a back up tackle.
Defensive Line (7)
We can't expect Carrethers to start right away behind Lissemore. He will learn behind Geathers and he will need to earn his spot as the Nose Tackle backup. Guy and Scafe would be defensive end backups.
While Attaochu learns from the veterans, we have good backups in Walker who could also play outside linebacker and Gachkar is great on special teams too. We release the bone-headed Keiser for Tourek Williams who has one year of experience already.
Defensive Backs (10)
Our biggest weakness gets the most depth. One thing I notice is we play more nickel packages because of the nfl being a passing league. Marshall or Williams could be our starting nickel corners. Chris Davis has punt returning experience and I think he has the best chance of being the yearly undrafted free agent who cracks our roster because he also fills a need on competition for corner back.
SPECIAL TEAMS (3)
Nick Novak* (Kicker)
Mike Scifres* (Punter)
Mike Windt* (Long Snapper)
These positions we obviously don't need to change.
What do you think of this final 53 man roster?
