Don't get me wrong. May 8-10 will be crucial days in deciding the Chargers success in 2014. Obviously, DJ Fluker and Keenan Allen made huge rookie impacts, so the draft is still very valuable for Tom Telesco and the Bolts in general.
However, we can't forget about March 11th: the beginning of Free Agency. Telesco may consider the Chargers to be a organization built by the draft, but one could argue that last year's free agents made a bigger impact.
First of all, let's get the easy one out of the way. Danny Woodhead was an essential piece in the Chargers 4th ranked offense in 2013. His 605 receiving yards are comparable to Eddie Royal's 621. However, Woodhead is a running back and Royal is a wide receiver.
Next, protecting Philip River's left side was King Dunlap. Yes, he was injured for a good part of the year, but in the eleven games he started in 2013 he was a presence on the field. Dunlap was critical in lower River's sacks by 19.
But what I'm really trying to say is, relax with the mock drafts. Free agency begins in five days! (and Tom Telesco's pretty good at it) The draft is just so overly hyped... and now with the Seahawks Super Bowl, everyone's looking for the next Russel Wilson third round pick. Or the next Richard Sherman 6th round pick. But those are extremely hard to find. So let's all focus on free agency. Put the decisions in our hands, not 24 teams selecting before us!
