Chargers Strong Safety Brandon Taylor could be ready in time for Training Camp

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Were those of us worried about the Chargers not signing or drafting a strong safety merely Chicken Littles?

Brandon Taylor, the Chargers' 2012 third round pick, missed the first nine weeks of offseason training thanks to rehabbing from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear sustained in the third quarter of the Jets' game this past December. However, by all accounts the second year player's rehab has gone well and he could still be the favorite to start at strong safety ahead of Marcus Gilchrist (who has been taking snaps at the position during workouts) for the 2013 Chargers.

Michael Gehlken (paywall) reported:

"Of course you are (optimistic)," coach Mike McCoy said. "(Head athletic trainer) James (Collins) and his staff do a great job with those players and put them on a schedule like anyone who has a surgery, whether it's during the season or during the offseason program. They're on a plan, and we'll look for good things when he gets healthy."

Taylor won't be 100% at the start of training camp, but those around the team are growing more and more optimistic that he'll be ready to participate. Dr. James Andrews, who performed Taylor's surgery, is still expected to review his progress once or twice before training camp kicks off on July 24, but it looks like many of our concerns about Taylor's availability for the upcoming season may have been unfounded.
