Trade out of the 1st

I read an article recently that's been nagging at me ever since. The article suggested a few possible trade down partners, one of whom is the 49ers, with a pretty solid roster and 13 draft picks. The supposition was that the Chargers could get the 31st, 34th and 96th (although I don't think they have the 96th pick... probably 93rd) from the 9ers for their 11th. It got me thinking: with all the holes in the Chargers' roster, the long depth in this year's draft, and the shortage of elite talent in it, could we get more picks by trading out of the 1st round entirely? According to this draft value chart the value of the 11th pick roughly equals the 49ers 34th, 61st, 74th, 93rd, 128th and 227th. It's a lot of picks for the 9ers to give up, but they'd still have 8 picks in the draft, plus their first would come early, at 11, instead of the end of the first round.

The Chargers would end up with (along with a quick mock considering positions of need):

  • 2.34 - Terron Armstead T
  • 2.45 - Tyler Wilson QB
  • 2.61 - Shamarko Thomas SS
  • 3.74 - Darius Slay CB
  • 3.76 - Johnathan Jenkins DT
  • 3.93 - Kiko Alonso ILB
  • 4.110 - Cornelius Washington OLB
  • 4.128 - Akeem Spence DE
  • 5.145 - Kevin Reddick ILB
  • 6.179 - Cory Grissom DE
  • 7.221 - Manase Foketi - G
  • 7.227 - Vernon Kearney - CB
What do you think about trading that far down? Is it possible, and would you favor it?
