How Much Salary Cap Space Do the San Diego Chargers Have Left?

Philip Rivers accounts for more than $17 million in 2013 cap space - USA TODAY Sports

With the NFL Draft a few weeks away and the big "free agency" period over, how much money does Tom Telesco have left to spend with in 2013?

To answer a question that I've been getting repeatedly, let's all go look at this article on NFL.com that outlines how much cap space each NFL team has left. If you're simply interest in the San Diego Chargers, here are their figures:

  • 50 players currently under contract
  • $123,517,848 in team cap space
  • $116,480,718 in cap space currently used
  • $7,037,130 in cap space remaining

7 million may not seem like a lot, especially when you consider that 2 of that will probably get tied up in rookie contracts and the team needs to leave a few million available during the season in case of emergency. That being said, 7 million is about average for teams that don't have a ridiculous amount of cap space (Eagles, Buccaneers, Jaguars, Browns, Bengals).

It's not enough money to sign any big name free agents, but there are no big name free agents left. It puts Tom Telesco in a spot where he can save the money for the season or sign a good piece if one falls in his lap for the right place. Not a terrible place to be.
