First FanPost! Charger Mock Draft 2014

Hey guys my friend just recently filled me into SB Nation and how it works so bear with me as I'm still getting the hang of it. This draft is going to be a big one for the Chargers organization. We are in a critical part of our rebuilding years under the Mike McCoy/Tom Telesco era. There are several glaring needs on this team. I feel as though Telesco and McCoy know these as well as we do, and we'll address them in the best fashion possible. Here is my first of many pre draft mocks.....

First Round- Jason Verret CB TCUJason_verrett_tcu_v_texas_n9_ipom9coul_medium

Our biggest glaring need at the moment is in our secondary, more specifically the cornerback position. I was really excited with the Derek Cox signing last offseason and had high hopes for Shareece Wright and Marcus Gilchrist. Shareece Wright would be a better corner in the slot, but is just not skilled enough to play on the outside. The drafting of Verret would be an instant increase in production from our secondary. The 5'10'' 176 pound corner is ballhawk with great tackling abilities. The tackling ability alone should make him an attractive option for the Chargers, as our tackling has been less that stellar to say the least. Our biggest competition for Verret would be the St. Louis Rams at 13 as they also have a need in the secondary.

Second Round- Zack Martin G/OT Notre Dame

The Chargers having a weak offensive line is somewhat of a broken record to us fans. We are made aware of it every week and see it during games when Rivers is under pressure. My utter hatred for Jeromy Clary influenced this pick highly as Martin is more than capable of playing the guard and tackle position. Injuries on the offensive line this year have forced the coaching staff to move tackles to guards and having tackles switch sides. Zack Martin would fit in perfectly with the offensive line. He has had an awesome season, recently showing off against the nations sack leader in Stanford's Trent Murphy. Could end up being a steal in the second round.

Third Round- Michael Sam DE/OLB Missouri

The type of player the Chargers flirt with year after year a hybrid OLB/DE. Our pass rush thus year again has been very hot and cold. Inconsistency and the loss of Melvin Ingram in the offseason hurt us without a doubt. Sam is the type of player that can really help to disguise coverages and apply effective pass rush with. Definitely a player worth taking at this spot.

Round 4- Calvin Pryor Safety Lousiville

Pryor is the type of player that would compliment Weddle extremely well on the back end of the defense. A big hitter who is even more impressive in coverage and with his ball skills. He could very effectively come up and help in run support, very similar to what Weddle does. It would be hard to throw against the improved secondary, assuming they go with Verrett or a similar player in the first.

Round 5- Dri Archer WR/RB Kent State

What i believe to be the steal of the draft guys. Dri Archer is a Tavon Austin type of player. He does everything from kick return to runningback and wide receiver. The knock on him will obviously have to do with his size, and the fact he plays for Kent State... but we know better don't we. Kent State, and small schools in general, doesn't necessarily make a player bad. He is a serious football player, and even though I believe very strongly his combine will only help his draft stock. He is a better player on the field then in gym shorts. A true steal and would be extremely excited to see him in powder blues. Go look at his tape if you don't know him.

Round 6- Arie Kouandjio G Alabama

A project at Guard for sure considering he's been very up and down this season. He would't have to be rushed to play right out of the gate and could take a season to develop. Someone worth noting considering the Bama prestige when it comes to big meatballs on the line.

Round 7- Kerry Hyder DT Texas Tech

Not a plug and play on the defensive line by any stretch, but has a high ceiling and could flourish under the tutelage of the veterans on the team. A big body that could provide some help in a reserve role. Definite room for improvement, but strong enough to be a surprise pick.

Let me know what you guys think below, if you have any suggestions on players or anything let me know I'm always curious who is coming into the league under the radar.

Good Night and Go Chargers
