Until we win one, we can't say shit. Chargers are a wonderful team. The Chargers are a San Diego institution. Many here at BFTB have been going to games since we were children. Indeed, the Chargers are a source of great pride. Nothing unites the Filipinos, the Latinos, whites, African Americans, Iraqis, Eritreans, like the chargers late in the season.
San Diego is a quixotic town (I get paid by the scrabble score.) We don't have a lot of easily identifiable community images. Palm trees, beaches, maybe a tiny Tony Gwynn. The closest thing that comes to stand for San Diego in Ron burgundy. Ron fucking burgundy. A character from a movie with an oasis of jokes that have nothing to do with San Diego. You feel me?
But we have the Chargers. A bolt. LT, Dan Fouts, Don Coryell. San Diego comes alive for the Chargers. San Diego might be more of a feeling, a way of living that any one image can conjure. But we have the Chargers. Where am I going with all this?
We don't have a championship and the raiders do (three). The raiders with their dysfunctional dynamics and absurd fan-base have a championship. We are a much better team and have pride in our team and community. We are what a championship city and team feels like a championship team. But until we bring home the championship to this great community, we can't say shit.
