Keys to Beating the Chiefs:
Actually, just having more points on the board at the end of regulation will be enough for me. But, I really hope the Chargers address the following after the miserable loss to the Falcons before playing the Chiefs.
1. Protect Philip Rivers. It's easy to say " Protect Rivers", but sometimes easier said than done.
However, if he is getting a ton of pressure, I'd like to see shorter pass plays.
This could be established particularly with Ryan Mathews and Eddie Royal and dump off passes. Also two and even three tight end sets. Rivers took a beating all 4 quarters last week. The routes didn't get any shorter, and the pass protection didn't get any better, Adjustments have to be made accordingly!
2. Establish Jackie Battle early. If he and Le'Ron McClain can push the pile, and tire the D-line, Mathews will have much more success later in the game. Running Mathews a ton on the opening drives against a fresh and fast Chiefs defense may not be the Bolts best decision.
3. Stop giving so much cushion on pass plays.
Honestly, my nine year old could have completed some of the passes against the Chargers last week.
What good is a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 8? The defense needs to get off the field on 3rd down, that wont happen if they continue to allow so much space.
4. All out blitz (early and often). Matt Cassel does not perform well under pressure, when given time though, he gets hot, and has the potential to pick the secondary apart.
It's easy to say things like " Stop the run, stop the pass, protect our quarterback, move the ball, etc.. But honestly in the Falcons game, I saw very little adjustments being made, and the Chargers paid the price.
Talent wise , I'd take the Chargers in this game any day, however, they seem to lose to inferior opponents because they often do little to adapt to the game!
Conclusion: When they're on, the Chargers can play with anyone, when they're off, they are their own worst enemy!
If played to their potential :
Not Adjusting to the game:
I hope that team we like shows up!
Prediction… Chargers go 3-1.
