I was really high on the guy the end of last season, and through the off season.
I know Chiefs fans warned us about him, and he earned the nickname " The big Lazy" out of Baltimore which had stuck.
I knew he was cut by both of those teams, and the Chargers started him immediately off waivers, and the guy was as solid as you could possibly hope for.
He had a heck of a stretch for 7 games, and definitely earned a starting spot, but I wasn't quite sold on elite money after a partial season.
The mood amongst Charger fans was nothing but full appreciation and trust in Gaither, so I was cool with it.
I know he got 13.3 million dollars guaranteed , and from there he just disappeared.
After two days of practice he was listed to have back spasms, which for a guy his size 6'9" 340 lbs is perfectly normal after 7 months of inactivity. But even then I thought he would be available for pre-season.
Here we are 7 weeks later, starting a un-drafted rookie right tackle( Mike Harris) in his spot.
By the way, Harris is doing quite better than I expected .
But what I didn't expect is such a nonchalant attitude regarding Gaither.
Usually, the severity of injury to your starting left tackle is enormous concern, however out of San diego focus priority seems to be:
1. Ryan Mathews
2. Antonio Gates
3. Vincent Brown
The Chargers don't even appear to be shopping a left tackle , and the concern level for Gaither seems non-existent.
So what is the scoop on Gaither?
Have the fans just totally given up on him? Are they that impressed with Harris?
If 4 doctors cant find anything wrong with Gaither, does guaranteed money become breeched?
The real bummer to me is that the Chargers had to cut guys like Cesaire and Hester who worked their butts off for a fraction of what Gaither earned, just to secure a roster spot for someone who appears no more interested in playing football than the man in the moon.
I know I'm letting my opinion get in the way, but what do you guys think, was San Diego robbed again?
