Betting Lines for the Packers/Chargers Preseason Game

Philip Rivers shows Ryan Mathews the proper way to slip a crisp bill to the maitre d' without drawing attention.

Alright, you degenerates, the betting lines for Thursday's preseason game between the San Diego Chargers and Green Bay Packers is out. If this matters to you, if this is a day that you have been waiting for anxiously, I strongly encourage you to click this link.

For the rest of us, the ones that don't bet but understand that Las Vegas knows way more about the outcome of NFL games than we'll ever know, these lines are still intriguing. Not so much because of where they started out (Packers +2.5), in the first preseason game I imagine the home team is often favored by about 3 points, but because of how much they're shifting (currently Packers +1 or even, depending on which site you look at).

Is this because Vegas likes the Packers depth over the Chargers depth? Perhaps it's because Jarret Johnson and Jared Gaither are expected to miss the game. No, wait, I know what it is. When the line came out, there was probably some hope that Charlie Whitehurst would be playing QB for about half of the game. Now those snaps will go to Kevin O'Connell, who has only been with the team for a few days and doesn't have Whitehurst's experience level with game time or with Norv Turner's offense.
