San Diego Chargers "Lose" to San Francisco 49ers by a score of 35-3 in Final Preseason Game

Let's talk about perspective here. The fourth game of the preseason is almost always preceded with the word "meaningless." We all hear about the meaningless game, but how many of us truly know what that means? Judging by some of the commenters in the Open Thread, not many take the "meaningless" modifier to heart.

There was not a lot in this game to instill confidence in the Chargers, on either side of the ball. The Chargers came out looking flat. The San Francisco 49ers second-string offense ran all over the Chargers first-string defense, all the way to the end zone.

On the Chargers first offensive drive? They turned the ball over when Antonio Gates had the ball stripped from his arms. San Francisco scored a second touchdown on just two plays after the turnover. What happened in the Chargers' second offensive drive? Philip Rivers turned the ball over again. And that was the end of his night. Confidence-building stuff, huh?

Here's the best part about this preseason game: none of it means jack.

This game serves as one final audition for all the players on the bubble. It's also one final hurrah for the players that had no chance to make the team. This game is more about individual performances than it is about the final score or how well the team played overall.

Above all that, the most important thing that needs to come out this game: no injuries to starters. The Chargers were successful in not getting anyone injured.

I'm not well-versed enough in all the players to know how well they've been doing all preseason. That said, Michael Spurlock looked good at times. Mike Willie, the one everyone seems to root for this preseason, struggled a bit. Cam Thomas looked good, as did Kendall Reyes. There were plenty of players that didn't look good out there though, I'm not going to take the time to name them.

I have to imagine the coaches and A.J. Smith will be up much of the night figuring out who stays and who gets cut. The Chargers need to lose 22 players by 1:00PM PDT Friday. That means immediately at the end of this game, the team has just under 15 hours to decide who is out of a job.

So we leave it to you, fine people of the BFTB community. Who do you think earned a spot on the Chargers 53-man roster? Who is going to be shown the door? Let us know in the comments!
