Since last year's race was such a success, the San Diego Chargers are again doing a 5K race from Chargers Park to the 50 yard line of Qualcomm Stadium. Registration for the event is $35 until June 16th, when it goes up to $40.
The "Bolt to the Q" in 2011 was a way to raise money for Marcus McNeill's "Mack's Miracles" foundation last year, but this year the proceeds will go towards the Trish & Ryan Mathews Door of Hope Chest. The T&RMDoHC (not a real acronym) is a foundation that helps homeless mothers and their children get back on their feet after they successfully graduate from the Salvation Army's one-year Door of Hope program.
In addition to the 5K race, there will also be a 1K "fun run" held for children that are at least 7 years old. Early registration for that is $15.
Just like last year, I will be running the Chargers 5K as will a few other members of the BFTB staff. Now that we've gotten the lay of the land for last year, it should be a little easier to organize a get-together immediately before or after the race this year. If nothing else, you'll be able to find us by looking for the guys in the RUN MOAR performance shirts.
No word yet on what type of free shirt you'll get for running, but the team gave out some sweet Nike Dri-Fit powder blue shirts last year. Expect something within that range of awesome for 2012.
Today is the third Friday of May and the race takes place on the third Saturday of July (the 21st, at 7:30am). That means you have almost exactly two months to get yourself into shape to run a 5K that include plenty of steep uphill and downhill climbs. I'd recommend finding some time this weekend and trying to run a mile, just to see how your legs feel.
