Hello Chargers Fans, some questions from an outsider

Howdy Chargers fans, I'm from Gang Green Nation, the Jets blog, I come in peace and mean no hostility whatsoever, i'll just say that right now. Anyway, for some reason I was kind of upset that the Chargers didn't win the AFC West this year, since I would've liked to see them in the playoffs. Not too sure why, maybe I just like the SoCal area. Anyway, if you guys don't mind I have a few questions for y'all.

-Do you guys expect to have back Vincent Jackson and Mike Tolbert? they seem like good contributors that i would imagine you guys would miss.

-Speaking of running backs, do you think AJ is gonna draft a Darren sproles-type back, because i heard Philip really missed him.

-Why Exactly was Norv on the hotseat this season? Doesn't he have the best win % in the franchise history and doesn't Dean Spanos like him? I can kinda understand why AJ was on the hotseat since he's apparently made some questionable draft picks the past couple of years. Are you guys happy to have these two back?

-Where are you guys looking to go in the draft? Pass rusher? Offensive line? receiver? Defensive line?

-How have some of AJ's more recent draft picks like Ryan Mathews, Donald Butler, Antoin Cason, and Larry English worked out in your eyes?

-Are you guys thinking about bringing back LT? Quite frankly, most of us Jets faithful don't expect him back, and don't think he really even wants to come back. We have a young, fast back on the roster who's probably gonna take over his third-down-back role next year.

-Do you guys remember Brian Schottenheimer? I think the was Drew Brees' old QB coach with you guys, and he was recently our OC. We couldn't be happier to see him gone, but did you guys also dislike him?

-Why was Marty fired after going 14-2 in 06?

That's about all I can think of. If you have any questions about the Jets, feel free to ask, i'm happy to answer. Let's hope that we can both make the playoffs next year and that we don't get in each others' way too much, even though we play each other.

I have nothing better to do(who needs studying for midterms!)

-Marty was first and foremost fired after going 14-2 in 06’ because of a lack of playoff success. It’s generally believed that “Martyball” of run-run-pass-punt wasn’t a successful strategy at the higher levels so they opted for a more offensively diverse minded HC, i.e. Norv.
-Some believe they’ll do that 1-day sign and retire deal with LT, I’m personally split on his returning. Sometimes nostalgia is worth the price of admission.
-His recent drafts are split. Okay, they’re worse than his famous 04(?) -06(?) drafts where he was striking gold, but they’re not bad. Larry English’s foot imploded, but he has potential and wasn’t the biggest OLB squid in his draft. Cason is good in zone, bad in man, has had trouble tracking the ball this year in general. Mathews was in the pro-bowl, but still fumbles. Butler’s a beast, Thomas is good, etc. All in all average.
-This kid Devon Wylie from Fresno State has interested the Chargers. He’s pretty Darren Sproles-esque

(continued)

-Norv’s on the hot seat, because it’s generally believed we have one of the most talented rosters(i.e. a perceived elite quarterback), and we’ve missed consecutive trips to the big dance. This year it was because El Capitain had some poor performances and our defense generally stinks. Further. time management issues, a perceived lack of discipline that goes from the top-down through the roster, comments from Sproles that we don’t work hard, etc. etc. Generally, Norv is seen as this weak scrawny, turkey neck dude that isn’t tough enough to hang in the NFL at the coaching position. I’m glad to have both back. I think AJ does as good a job as anyone in drafting and picking up FAs. He goes after his guy, which I can respect.
-We have many holes in the draft. I don’t really watch college ball, but i understand there’s a weak crop of pass rushing talent so best fit I guess. SS, OL, OLB are all areas of concern. There’s speculation the Chargers might dip into free agency to fill some holes.
-Who knows with V-Jax and if I had to guess, Tolbert stays and Hester goes, money-wise.
-I don’t remember Brian Schottenheimer.

Yeah, I've seen the highlights

and I agree man, Wylie is a beast. His lateral quickness and vertical explosiveness is definitely pro-ready. I REALLY hope the Chargers draft him. He’s probably the most physically gifted of his type of player in this year’s draft.

Yup.

My Raiders ain’t gonna draft him; we got too many WRs already. Be cool to see him go into the NFL and do well.

Caps lock is not cruise control for cool.

-Do you guys expect to have back Vincent Jackson and Mike Tolbert? they seem like good contributors that i would imagine you guys would miss.

They will push for both, Tolbert is clearly the number two these days, and Jackson could price himself out of the Chargers plans but they should try to keep both.

-Speaking of running backs, do you think AJ is gonna draft a Darren sproles-type back, because i heard Philip really missed him.

Not sure, he has a track record of finding runningbacks late in the draft, i could see someone taking in the later rounds (maybe sdsu’s ronnie hillman?)

-Where are you guys looking to go in the draft? Pass rusher? Offensive line? receiver? Defensive line?

pass rush is the most important

-How have some of AJ’s more recent draft picks like Ryan Mathews, Donald Butler, Antoin Cason, and Larry English worked out in your eyes?

1. Mathews- has all the tools to be elite, really like the guy and think he is truly special.

2. Butler- played great in his first year (was injured entire rookie year) and has a bright future and should only get better

3. Cason- has shown potention but is way to inconsistent, he can be very good some games and just awful in others (im sure you remember plax owning him) he should have another year to prove himself

4. English- all but a bust, he has one more year but i would be surprised if he doesnt get injured

-Are you guys thinking about bringing back LT? Quite frankly, most of us Jets faithful don’t expect him back, and don’t think he really even wants to come back. We have a young, fast back on the roster who’s probably gonna take over his third-down-back role next year.

very very unlikely. didnt end well with him last time, was a great all time charger but the only time he will be under contract will be a one day contract

-Why was Marty fired after going 14-2 in 06?

wayyyyyy to long to explain right now, maybe someone else will.

thanks for stopping by, hope i could help

I am not sure anyone can explain that one.....

2006 under Marty the Chargers went 14-2. The losses to the Ravens and Chiefs were both by 3 points. Lost the Chiefs game on a last second 53 yard field goal. Lost in the playoffs to the Patriots by…..you guessed it-3 points. Those were all winable games but AJ viewed Marty as a coach that can’t win playoff games (Chargers have won alot of playoff games since Norv came right?) AJ did’nt like Norv because he spoke his mind and that is why he was kicked to the curb. Same thing happened to Bobby Ross (after leading the Chargers to the SB in ‘94), he had an argument with the GM and was dismissed just like that. Spanos and his GM’s stick like glue and when someone does something they don’t like they are history. Marty lead the Chargers to best record in franchise history and it is my opinion that if he would have remained head coach there would be a SB trophy in Dean Spanos’ office right now (IMO)

Thanks for the answers guys

If you have an questions about the Jets, i’ll gladly answer

by darshv3 on Feb 7, 2012 4:27 PM PST reply actions

couple questions.............

1) Do you think the Jets will resign Aaron Maybin? He’s still very young and seemed to play way better for the Jets than he ever did in Buff.

2) What do you see the Jets targeting in the 1st round? I’ve seen several mocks that have them going OLB in the first , which means more than likely the best OLB prospects will be off the board before SD picks at 18.

by J Korber on Feb 10, 2012 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

sure

1.) Most of us think he’ll be back, we have zero pass rush as it is and he led us in sacks (six…yeah, our pass rush is THAT bad). We all want him back and hope that maybe he can put on some weight, learn to play the run better, and take on more of a role as time goes on.

2.) OLB is a popular choice among most of us fans, and it’s certainly a possibility if Upshaw or Ingram is still on the board. We also have areas of need at RT, Safety, and Receiver. We’re probably gonna deal with right tackle through some other means, there are no Safeties to draft in the 1st round with Barron having that injury, but it’s not inconceivable that we draft a receiver in round one. The FO looked at a LOT of receivers at the senior bowl, and if they don’t go that way in round one, i’ll be shocked to not see them draft at least one in the later rounds. Personally, i’d like a pass rusher.

Heres what will happen in the draft

1st round .Alshon Jeffery*, WR, South Carolina
Height: 6-4. Weight: 233.

2nd round. Vinny Curry, DE/OLB, Marshall
Height: 6-3. Weight: 265.

3rd round. Josh Chapman, DT/NT, Alabama
Height: 6-1. Weight: 310.

4th. Michael Egnew, TE, Missouri
Height: 6-5. Weight: 251.

5th. Ronnie Hillman*, RB, San Diego State
Height: 5-10. Weight: 190.

Wouldn't take Jeffrey that high, but I like the rest of your draft if it could work out.

I’d take a guard before another nose tackle, though. Big guys are easier to find in free agency on the defensive side of the ball.

Heard rumors.............

Jeffrey ballooned up to over 260 lbs and was running a 4.88 40 yd dash. If there is any possibility this guy is the next Mike Williams and is going to eat himself out of the league there’s no way you can take him in the first.

The combine will be interesting to see if this kid reports in top physical condition.

by J Korber on Feb 20, 2012 5:38 AM PST up reply actions

continue....

6th. Cliff Harris*, CB/PR, Oregon
Height: 5-11. Weight: 180.

7th. Joe Long, OT, Wayne State
Height: 6-5. Weight: 308.

Chargers are still a very good team they dont need much…With these players and two or three key free agents ( Laron landry, Carilas Cambell..THAT IS IT!!!) with good coaching…BEAST MODE!!!!!!
