7 round mock draft prediction

This a Mock draft for the Chargers and it might not be perfect but this looks preety solid if you ask me. All of the players look like they come in and make an immediate impact, even if that means special teams or starting position. Of course a player like Courtney Upshaw can come in and basically have starting position waiting for him but the rest of these players can help the Chargers in a big way.

1. Courtney Upshaw-OLB-Alabama

2.Zebrie Sanders-OT-Florida State

3.Casey Hayward-CB-Vanderbilt

4. Harrison Smith-S-Notre Dame

5.Juron Criner-WR-Arizona

6.William Vlachos-G-Alabama

7.Sean Cattouse-S-California

Ummm

I am not sure if Smith lasts until Rd 4 and if we do get him there is no reason to draft another safety. We could use a RB instead and TE needs to be addressed between rd 3 and 5 to be able to land someone of quality. Sanders would be good in rd 2 since he wouldn’t feel the need to step in immediately. I would like to see CB, DL & possibly RB addressed in free agency since there are to many holes to fill with just the daft. Also 1 or 2 unsigned FA would need to be found to fill remaining holes. Get to work AJ. The biggest offseason of your career starts in a few weeks.

I've heard Mike Mayock on NFL network state.....

That Smith is a 2nd round prospect. I know Walter Football and other places have him as a 4th rounder, but a lot of the talent evaluators are suggesting he will likely go much higher.

I think what we do in FA will have a huge impact on how the team drafts.

I agree....

I agree on Smith, some boards I have seen have him a solid second rounder. I also agree with Upshaw being your number 1 pick (he is mine too). I have seen 6 different draft boards that have him dropping to the #22 or #23 pick in the first. If he is still there at #18 AJ would be foolish not to take him. Why no TE’s on your list? Don’t you think we need some new blood at that position? Gates is great but his foot problem will never go away, only slow him down.

I just felt like there are other positon that we really need help on for example round 3 where I predicted casey hayward to come to us, I actually thought TE there but are corner positon is looking real bad cause of the aging Jammer and Cason isnt looking to shabby to me so I mean we can use a corner there.

If he is there at 18 great....................

But I suspect he will be a top 10 pick and doubt he gets past Buffalo at 10. To get from 18 to 10 will likely require losing another high pick (possibly our 2nd or 3rd).

We’ve squandered many picks in the last several drafts. There are a ton of FA’s on our team now, and even without losing several of them (which we inevitably will) there are a lot of holes to plug here. We can ill afford to sacrifice picks this year.

Additionally, this draft is pretty deep with talent at OLB. If Upshaw is gone at 18 (which he probably will be) there are plenty of other OLB prospects:

Whitney Mercelus, DE, Illinois
Nick Perry, DE, USC
Vinny Curry, DE/OLB, Marshall
Ronnell Lewis, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
Andre Branch, DE, Clemson

All of the guys mentioned above will be there at 18 or available on day 2.

I’d be all for moving down from 18 to 25 or 26 if we can do that and acquire another 2nd or 3rd rounder.

If we don't get him then

I think Nick Perry might be the choice since our LB coach is from USC…I was hoping we would draft a pass rushing LB that has played in a 3-4 defense already

by chargerclipperfan on Feb 6, 2012 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

yeah I thought nick perry would be great pick if Courtney Upshaw doesnt fall to us because like you said hes familiar with the new linebacker coach and he would be great for the 3-4 defense that we run. So yeah hes some we should consider if we dont get are hands on Upshaw

by BoltsInsider on Feb 6, 2012 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

yeah if Upshaw is gone by then, Nick perry is a no brainer because we just hired his former linebacker coach and he was involved in the 3-4 defense that they ran in USC.

I think Perry is there at 18 unless something big happens at the combine.........

I’d be happy taking Perry without having to sacrifice picks to move up to grab Upshaw.

I like Perry's upside

If the Chargers pick a pass rusher with the 1st pick I think Nick Perry would be the best choice. He has better speed and athleticism than Upshaw IMO and would fit in as another Shaun Phillips on the edge. Yes Upshaw is huge and strong and played in a legit D in college, but at the NFL level you got to have speed and burst to beat these Tackles on a regular basis. Upshaw at the Senior Bowl was invisible. Tackles in the NFL are strong and I think they will be able to anchor Upshaw without a threat of quickness to beat them.

Cam Johnson is another name to throw out there if Chargers don’t take a pass rusher with the 1st. He was more entertaining than Upshaw at the Senior Bowl IMO

I agree............

Perry may actually be a better NFL OLB prospect than Upshaw.

Upshaw is ENORMOUS! He is listed at 273 lbs. in the national championship game, but he looked even bigger than that. Like Defensive Tackle big. He looked much more like a d lineman who might occassionally stand up than a LB who might occassionally be lined up with his hand in the dirt. The guy is only 6’2" so 273 lbs. maybe more is a lot of weight to be carrying. I wonder if he would be able to do anything in coverage. Also, you can’t just bull rush every NFL offensive lineman. The best pass rushers at OLB are tremendous athletes.

by J Korber on Feb 10, 2012 5:21 AM PST up reply actions

but if he could move like a 250 pounder

and provide decent (less than average but not poor) cover skills…. I think he would be a BEAST on the outside (and eventually with his size he could move inside). Could you imagine a back like Darren Spoles turnin the corner on our DE laughing at him cuz there is just no way that DE is gonna get to the corner first and then all the sudden here comes another DT that is just as fast as he is!?! You can coach speed, and you can’t coach size. If this kid has the skills to play outside then you go get him because he is a freak…… but lets not get carried away yet, lets see what he does at the combine first then we should have a better idea of kind of tools he is bringing to the table.

He will be there I believe....

Almost every board I have read have the Chargers picking Upshaw because most teams view him as being too heavy to play OLB in the NFL. I believe he will still be there (hoping anyways). If not, take Fleener from Stanford.

by boltbeliever17 on Feb 7, 2012 8:55 AM PST reply actions

In the first?

Fleener is good but there’s not a chance in Hell that we go TE in the first.

Even if we did

which I seriously doubt, I’[d have to take Dwayne Allen over Fleener.

Also, I'd prefer not to take Criner.

I’d rather take Devon Wylie earlier, and/or a guy like Tommy Streeter (Miami-FL) or Matt Austin (Utah State) in the later rounds. My super-sleeper at wide receiver is Ifeanyi Momah out of Boston College— he’s big, he’s physical, he blocks well, and plays smart. BC has had terrible QBs since Matt Ryan left, so his stats aren’t gaudy, but he could be very good in a short time.

I like Derek Moye late as well...........

He’s huge at 6’6" and can win jump balls. Kind of reminds me of Malcolm Floyd. e seems like a prototypical giant Chargers WR. The QB play at Penn State wasn’t very good the last 2 years so his numbers weren’t great. But he can play……………….and he’ll be around somewhere from the 5th possibly to UDFA.

Jets fan here. about upshaw

A lot of us don’t even think he’s gonna fall to US at 16, and if he does, we may end up taking him before you guys can. I don’t mean that in a rude way, just saying that it may be tough for you guys to land him.
