Chargers Draft Prospects: Riley Reiff
San Diego has a strong need for depth and quality on the offensive line. With that in mind, next up for ChargerMadness is Iowa offensive tackle Riley Reiff.
Position: OT
Height: 6' 6''
Weight: 300 Lbs.
Pros: Reiff is extremely athletic for his position, which may be due to the fact that he is a converted tight end. Reiff has good lateral agility and can prevent the bull rush. Reiff also has great reach and can reroute ends trying to speed rush inside. Reiff plays with a mean streak and has good footwork.
Cons: Reiff needs to work on his form as he sometimes overextends and needs to improve his posture. Sometimes can be pushed around by larger ends due and doesn't always have the best hand placement. he doesn't always get off the ball quickly, making up for this in college with his long reach. This will be an area that he will need to improve in, but it should come with coaching.
Reiff has the athletic ability to be a great tackle in the NFL. Reiff would be an immediate upgrade at right tackle over Clary and has all the tools to eventually switch over to left tackle.

Has AJ Smith ever selected an OL in the first 2 rounds?
I want to say he hasn’t, although I’m not certain about that. I think OL is a position where starting caliber talent can be had in later rounds. Much more so than some of the skill positions.
Also, what are the chances this guy is on the board at 18? I don’t think I’ve seen a mock that puts this guy outside the top 12 or 15 picks. Most have him rated as the #2 OT behind Kalil.
He probably will not be there.
I doubt that he will be there at 18, but if he does fall at all, I do think he would be a great pick. With the combine coming up, he may have a bad workout. It is a longshot that he is there at 18, but that is the fun of the draft, you can predict all you want, but sometimes, things sometimes takes an unexpected turn.

no doubt about it..........
Trying to predict the draft is really difficult. All it takes is one unanticipated move to set off a series of events no one would have otherwise thought possible. The run on QBs last year really caused some guys to drop.
I’m extremely hopeful we are able to retain all of our OL, or at the very least Hardwick, Dielman, and either Mcneil or Gaither. If we keep 3 of those 4 do you think it’s possible OL would be less of a need than say OLB or SS?
I do hope that we retain most of them as well. I am all for cutting McNeill and resigning Gaither. Hardwick will be retained. I think that we should move Clary to guard and allow Reiff to take over at right tackle. I am just unsure of the certainty of Dielman coming back. If we resign them, then yes, I do agree that it will free up our draft approach.

No way they cut McNeill at this point, unless he's physically unable to play.
He is guaranteed too much money.

McNeils Contract
Isn’t fully guaranteed. It is basically a series of 1 year deals. They can cut him and owe him nothing if he doesn’t (and won’t) pass the physical. He is as good as gone.
Well I stand (sit?) corrected.
I guess I’m not privy to the way McNeill’s contract extension was structured. I just looked it up and saw the 24.5 mil that he is guaranteed.

Yes.
Marcus Mcneil was a 2nd round pick.

That's right.......totally forgot
He was a 1st round talent, but there was some injury concern that pushed him back into the 2nd if I remember correctly.
