A Contemporary All Ex-Charger Team
One of the classic self-hating Charger fan moves is to talk about the success players like Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau had with other NFL teams after San Diego declared them washed up. Recently, this has mutated into bringing up Drew Brees and Darren Sproles. In a bout of Super Bowl self-loathing, I came up with the modern all ex-Chargers. I'm not going to get caught up in who cut who or didn't resign for this exercise. We'll just leave it that all of these guys were under San Diego control at one point, then they weren't. Most of the names on this list have pretty good logic behind how they left the team. Laurent Robinson probably stings the most in terms of how easily he could have been retained (over a guy like Brian Walters).
Ex-Chargers that are Flourishing in the NFL
Quarterback - Drew Brees
Running Back - Darren Sproles, Michael Turner
Wide Receiver - Laurent Robinson, Wes Welker
Tight End - Scott Chandler
Offensive Line - None!
Defensive Line - Dave Ball
inebacker - Ben Leber, Kevin Burnett
Defensive Back - Antonio Cromartie, Drayton Florence,
Special Teams - Kassim Osgood, C.J. Spillman (for him, staying on a roster = flourishing)
Coaching - Ron Rivera, Cam Cameron (as a Coordinator), Wade Phillips (as a Coordinator), Rob Chudzinski
After the jump we will present the opposite side of this coin - the "The We're-Glad-They-Are-Ex-Chargers Team". The remarkable thing about both lists is the O-line stability.
The We-Don't-Miss-These-Ex-Chargers Team
Quarterback - Jonathan Crompton, J.T. O'Sullivan, Charlie Whitehurst
Running Back - LaDainian Tomlinson
Wide Receiver - Seyi Ajirotutu, Legedu Naanee, Buster Davis, Kelley Washington
Tight End - Kris Wilson, Justin Peelle, Brandon Manumaleuna
Offensive Line - None!
Defensive Line - Travis Johnson, Jamal Williams
Linebackers - Shawne Merriman, Antwan Applewhite, Jyles Tucker, Brandon Siler
Defensive Backs - Quinton Teal, C.J. Spillman (ok seriously this time), Donald Strickland
Special Teams - David Binn, Kris Brown
Coaches - Wade Phillips (as a HC), Ted Cottrell, Cam Cameron (as a HC)

I'm not glad that Binn is gone
Though I suppose I do understand it. Also Cam Cameron isn’t really flourishing on other teams. Right now he is on the Ravens, and Ravens fans in general are about as happy to have him as the Jets were to have Brian Schottenheimer (which is to say not much).
Binn is definitely a special case
The context is that he hasn’t been awesome for someone else and made the fans regret losing him.. but yeah… fair point on both counts.

Key word "was"
After leaving the Bolts he played one more year as a backup, and now he’s been retired for 3 years.
And Florence signed a huge contract with the Jags and then was dumped after not living up to it.

What about Michael Turner
if we kept who knows what we could of got in the draft and he’s an every down back that stays healthy most of the time and doesn’t fumble too often

Sproles is a much more valuable player than Turner.

I don't agree with......
I don’t agree with some of the “We Don’t Miss” players.
How can you not miss LT? Seriously?
Seyi Ajirotutu was productive when he had his shot (huge game against the Texans)
Manumaleuna was a very solide back up TE and a good blocker.
Jamal Williams? Really? He anchored the middle of one of our best defenses of the past decade.
I should have probably phrased it differently
But none of those guys succeeded on the field for another team, making not keeping them a good decision.

Manumaleuna was overrated as a blocker
Jwall couldn’t stay healthy, Tutu played in other games and did mostly nothing.

You would have missed them had they still been here.

LT
I can’t believe all the animosity towards LT!
The man had some amazing years with the Chargers…and you don’t miss him anymore?
That just sucks.
Granted, his abilities aren’t what they used to be.
What do you expect when you have a workhorse RB running in 90% of your team’s plays for over 5 years?
To put LT in the same category as Charlie Whitehurst and Legedu Naanee is just low. Show some class and just leave LT off the list. There are plenty of other RB’s that could have gone on this list.
You guys are missing the point.
The guys we don’t miss list are guys that haven’t performed well since leaving. Nothing more.

LT had a pretty decent year 2 seasons ago, his first with the Jets (1282 total yds/6 td – Tolbert 951 total yds/11 td or Mathews 823 total yds/7 td).
Granted this past season wasn’t good, but I think that was more indicative of how bad the Jets were.

how bad the Jets are

My only point is that from a personnel standpoint, it was the right decision to move on.
We all miss 2006 LT, we don’t miss 2011 LT, strictly in terms of on field production. Had LT staying in San Diego the last two years, it would have hurt the team in a number of ways. LT hasn’t blazed it up for another team in the way the Brees and Sproles have. Take the emotion out of it, it was the right personnel move.
you're right
From the organization point of view, it was the right decision to move LT.
My only point is to just leave LT off the “Don’t miss” list. He did perform well his first year with the Jets.
There are other RB’s that could have gone on this list, or, crazy idea, leave it blank.
