Predicting who stays and who goes from the current Chargers Roster

In this post, I will predict who will stay, and who will not be a Charger next season.

QBs

Philip Rivers - Kept - This man will be a Charger next year, and he is a huge reason the Chargers will probably be able to bring in a quality head coach and GM. Philip ended the season with only 1 interception in the last 6 games. He threw 8 TD's and 1 pick over the month of December. So, we know this man can still throw the ball, and do it well. He just needs some more time in the pocket.

Charlie Whitehurst- CUT - during preseason. I think that this is the year the Chargers bring in some rookie to start molding under Philip River's leadership. Charlie is not a quality Quarterback, and is not the future of the franchise. Rivers will not step down for probably another 5 years, but you could definitely pick up a better backup in a late round in this year's draft.

HBs

Ryan Mathews - Kept - I believe that if he does not produce next season, he'll be looking for a new place to go. The Chargers need to draft someone who is reliable week in and week out. Or pick up that person up in Free Agency. Ryan Mathews is almost a guarantee to be on the roster next season, even with his underwhelming 2012 season.

Ronnie Brown - contract expires - I doubt he will be back on. His contract is up, and although he was ok as a 3rd down back this season, the Chargers could pick up someone like Johnathan Franklin out of UCLA in the 3rd or 4th round to take up that mantle with fresh legs, and the ability to take over if and when Mathews get's hurt.

Jackie Battle - contract expires - He was mediocre this year. I believe that Curtis Brinkley deserves the roster spot over Battle, but we'll see what happens in the draft and free agency. He'll be on the team until probably the last week of the preseason.

Curtis Brinkley - resigned - Possible that he keeps his spot. He is a restricted free agent, and I just don't see anyone trying to pick him up. The Chargers could pick him up cheap, and he's just a slight insurance whoever they bring in to subplant Mathews.

Edwin Baker - kept - I believe he will be kept on. He is still in a 3 year contract with the team.

FB

Le'Ron McClain - kept - was not given an adequate chance to shine this year, behind a bad offensive line. He still has 2 years left on his contract, and will most likely play through his whole contract.

WR

Malcom Floyd - kept - Has 3 years left on his contract, and was close to his 1st 1000 yard season. He had over 800 yards and 5 TD's this season, and there is no reason for him to be cut.

Danario Alexander - kept - It might take some money, but Denario was one of the few bright spots on the Chargers this season. He had 624 yards on 36 catches, and tied for the team lead of 6 TD's with Antonio Gates. He should be resigned. Hopefully he does not turn into another Jared Gaither. Rivers and Alexander built great chemistry quickly. Only Brandon Marshall, and Calvin Johnson had more yards over a 4 week stretch than Alexander did.

Vincent Brown - kept - Considered by many to be the best WR on the Chargers roster during the preseason. He and Rivers have great chemistry, and Rivers speaks lots of praise about the young wideout. He has 2 years left on his contract.

Eddie Royal - kept - is owed 3 million dollars for next season. Will probably be a situational player in the slot if he is kept. I like him more than Robert Meachem, and if he can stay healthy, he will be valuable for the chargers.

Robert Meachem - kept - He will be back because he is guaranteed 5 million next season. Hopefully he and Rivers will get a better rapport over the offseason, and hopefully will make less than 620,000 dollars per catch like he did this year.

Micheal Spurlock - kept - proved valuable in the past few weeks in the passing game, and had a punt return for a TD in week 16, and a 99 yard TD kickoff return in week 17. This guy is progressing quite nicely.

Seyi Ajirotutu, Mike Willie, and Richard Goodman I believe will all be cut. If there is an injury to a WR on the Chargers next season, one of them might get a phone call, but, right now, 6 receivers is enough.

I will work on TE, T, G, and C for the next post. That should come out in the next day or two!
