My Chargers 2012 Draft Predictions
Well this may be a shot in the dark but I have been scouring the internet and looking at lots of film and this is what I have come up with for the Chargers draft picks. I would love to hear your opinion on my picks and also would like to hear what your picks might be. Thank you.
First Round- Courtney Upshaw OLB (Alabama)
Second Round- Marvin McNutt WR (Iowa)
Third Round- Coby Fleener TE (Stanford)
Fourth Round- Blake DeChristopher OT (Virgina Tech)
Fifth Round- T.Y. Hilton WR/KR/PR (FIU)
Sixth Round- Ben Bojicic OC (Bowling Green)
Seventh Round- Kellen Moore QB (Boise State)
May swap the second and third round picks (wasn't sure about those two)

OL > WR
I’m not sure if Dielman/McNeill will be well enough to continue playing at 100% or if Hardwick will retire, but O Line is incredibly important. But then again, if AJ lets VJax go (AND Floyd is gone), then there’s a big, BIG need for WRs. Upshaw is solid, but he may go before the 18th pick and one OLB isn’t enough to fix the D.
But then again I don’t have a better idea of how this year’s draft will go.
BASKETBALL REASONS Y'ALL.
I agree..
I agree, that is why I put a couple of O linemen in my draft picks. Priority should be a pass rushing OLB and that is why I put Upshaw #1. If you look at the stats and highlights from my picks I think you will agree that my picks are valid. Fleener is going to be a beast!
McNutt in the second? Dude is rated as a fourth or fifth.

Need More Linemen
I like Upshaw in the 1st and Colby Fleener in the 3rd but I would prefer we get more DL help. I like Josh Chapman NT/Alabama or Billy Winn DE/Boise St. in the 2nd round.
I think we also need a OG like Amini Silatolu in the 5th round
Free agency
Will have a big impact on our draft. This year we have some questions to answer before creating our draft board. 1) Will Dielman, Hardwick, Gaither, or McNeill return? 2) Will we re-sign VJ or sign another top WR? 3) Do we address pass rush OLB or SS in free agency? AJ must answer these questions quickly so we can really focus on the draft. Best case scenario would be to re-sign Hardwick, Gaither and VJ. McNeill returns and we sign a SS and starting mid-level (Pierre Garçon type ) WR. This would narrow our focus to rush OLB in Rd 1. With OL,TE, and DT the focus in subsequent rounds. This seems like a year where AJ will not be able to rely solely on the draft to fill our needs to compete next year. A few free agent signings are paramount to success in 2012.
Excellent points!!!!!
We can speculate a lot about what might happen in the draft, but until we see what happens in FA and who we are able to retain it’s too wide open to try and predict.
Agree 100% with hopefully retaining Hardwick, Gaither, VJ…………….and I would add Garay and either Tolbert or Hester. Garay because good NT are hard to find and I’d hate to lose Hester and Tolbert. Then we’d need another FB and 2 really good special teamers.
There are not a lot of options out there as far as FA strong safeties. I think Tyvon Branch would be the only one worth signing. I’m also not totally oppossed to trying the Bob Sanders experiment one more time at veteran league minimum, assuming we draft a SS in rounds 1 – 3.
I like some of these prospects.........but.........
I don’t think these guys will be there when we are drafting, or they seem like a bit of a reach. Mcnutt in the 2nd is probably a bit of a reach and I think WR is a pretty low priority overall. This upcoming FA class is also FULL of really good FA candidates. For those reasons WR high (rounds 1-3) might be reaching considering some of our other needs.
I seriously doubt Upshaw (who is the consensus #1 OLB prospect) will be there at 18. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, but seriously doubt he’s available at 18 and I don’t want to see us moving up to take him higher than that as there are a lot of good DE/OLB prospects in this draft.
Also Fleener will most likely be gone by the end of the 2nd or top of the 3rd. I doubt he’s available where we are selecting in the 3rd. If he’s there I like that pick.
It’s important to point out there are very few high caliber safety prospects in this years draft as well as very few FA strong safety prospects. This might be an important position to fill in rounds 1 or 2.
I’d like to see Mark Barron in the 1st and then an OLB prospect in round 2.
I agree with you on some points as well.......
The reason I put Upshaw first is because IMO pass rush is our biggest priority on defense. I think that if Norv moves Jammer to SS and we can pick up a decent cornerback in FA I think the secondary will be strong again. I know Upshaw is a reach (he is the best out there) but looking at the needs and holes the other teams picking before the Chargers have there just MAY be a chance he is still there come #18? I like Fleener the best on my board, strong, fast for a TE, great hands and a good blocker. Paired with Gates the Chargers would have something close to what the Pats have right now. I think Hilton would be a great pick as well because we don’t have much of a return game and that kid is explosive (kind of reminds me a bit of Sproles but with better hands). Anyways, I thought the kids on my list would be good picks.
I'd like Joe Adams
over Hilton. And even though I’m a native Virginian & VT homer, I don’t want DeChristopher. We need more emphasis on the defensive side of the ball.
I’d also take LaDarius Green over Fleener – much more upside to his game.
If the thunder don't get ya then the lightning will!!
Robert Hunter
Only 1 defensive player?
1 – OLB (who probably won’t be there at 18)
2 WRs
1 TE
2 late round OL (T & C)
1 QB
uhmmmm I certainlyl hope we do not draft like this. I think the 2 most obvious needs on this team to win right now is Defensive (OLB/Pass Rush) and Offensive Line. This doesn’t mean that the other positions wouldn’t help or are not a concern, I just don’t think anything outside of OLB, DB, OL being must fills right now for the 2012 season. But again, like you said earlier, the draft focus could change based on our success or failures in the FA market.
Upshaw won't make it to #18.

Is Upshaw even the best option at OLB in the draft?
Is he worth taking at 18? During the Senior Bowl it seemed like Cam Johnson and Malik Jackson had just as much talent. Ohio States LT Mike Adams pretty much held Upshaw and Melvin Ingram in check the entire game. Upshaw just doesn’t seem to have that elite edge burst. Nick Perry looks like a intriguing OLB prospect. I seriously wouldn’t mind trading back and picking up another 2nd as a lot of good players will be taken though the mid rounds.
Near 270 lbs
he doesn’t have to have the burst of a 240lb OLB because he will have the power to go directly over and through the offensive lineman and/or back that stands in his way. To me he sounds like a pass rushing OLB who can also stop the run – just not good in coverage.
http://buffalowdown.com/2012/01/28/2012-nfl-draft-scouting-report-alabama-olb-courtney-upshaw/:
Strengths: Very productive in his senior season (18 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks). Pure pass rusher. Has a bunch of moves, including a great bull rush. Uses his hands very well. Pretty explosive, even when he was hampered by an ankle sprain. Very strong and sheds blocks well. Can play both stand-up 3-4 OLB and as a 4-3 DE. Holds up well against the run at both spots. Doesn’t miss tackles often. Rarely misses an assignment. Comes up big in big games – including a great showing in the BCS title game against LSU that earned him defensive MVP honors. Tough enough to play through a sprained ankle in 2010.
Weaknesses: Listed at "just" 6’2, 265 and might be smaller than that, which is certainly below-average size for an NFL pass-rusher. It’s not certain if he has the lateral quickness to drop into coverage in the NFL. Had a 2009 arrest for domestic violence.
Is he tooooooooo big to play OLB in the NFL????
He was listed at 273, but he seriously looked bigger than many college DTs. He looked like he could be an inside DT in a 4-3 at the NFL level build wise.
He also didn’t look like a lean mean 273…………….he looked enormous. Like a d lineman. He did not appear to be in great shape.
Can he move laterally? Can he do anything in coverage? I’d like to see this guy in the linebacker agility drills at the combine before passing judgement, but he looked like he might be too big to be an NFL OLB. There are very few OLBs over 270 lbs. Maybe 1 and I think that’s Mario Williams and he happens to be like 6’6".
He probably won’t be there at 18 anyway and I pray we don’t do any moving up early. We need all our picks.
Some predictions......
Some predictions I have read have Upshaw dropping as far as the #22 or #23 pick in the first round. Would be nice if he was still there when the Chargers pick at #18. He is freak and almost unblockable. Although, alot of the articles that I have read say that AJ is leaning more towards an offensive lineman in the first round, possible Riley Reiff?
Two things: Nobody knows where A.J. Smith is leaning outside of the organization. And...

and
Riley Reiff isn’t going to drop to 18. SD is going to have to move up for him.
Upshaw and Fleener
is not going to last as long as you have in your draft.
Not to mention
Kellen Moore is going to go higher than 7th round.
Why?
Even if he goes in the 1st or even goes undrafted altogether…. why do we care? We got 7 draft picks and more than 7 holes with a higher priority to fill on this roster….. a rookie backup QB is not a priority as a draft selection.
Go ahead and cite the Peyton Manning debacle cuz I know its coming.
Really?
What team in NFL wants an under-sized QB? Upshaw might go earlier and if not we should pick him. If he is gone, take Reiff….logical. Kellen Moore is not a QB teams want to lead their team, he is undersized and not a proto-typical QB. FA is going to determine alot of my draft picks….just wait and see.
Still is. He seems to be doing okay, though.

I think...
I think we should move up for Fleener…..the kid is a stud and look at NE with that two-headed monster they have! Gates in the middle, Fleener down field….could be better than the Pats have! Get this kid, he is a diamond in the rough……..mark my words!
He has been.
Fleener has been my sleeper the whole time. I have watched this guy for 3 years and he is the real deal. If nothing else, get this kid and put some lightning back in the Bolts! (IE Jimmy Graham)

Agree on the need for new blood at Tight End
Fleener would be awesome but would probably take moving up in the second to get him (IF he is even there). Moving back in the first and picking up more picks would be better IMO than moving up to get him and giving up picks. Even if Fleener isn’t the TE chosen, I hope a TE is chosen somewhere in this draft.
More 2nd to mid-round picks would be better anyways since AJ seems to do better with them than the 1’s.
I dont think Marvin Mcnutt is a good pick in the 2nd round. not saying hes not a good player but not worth picking up to early but a player like Bruce irvin would make a lot of sense or a gifted corner like casey hayward or jayron Hosley but other than that man your predictions are lookin preety solid
