Rivers suggests the loss of Sproles hurt the team?
Rivers went out and said it today! He wants Norv to stay and implies that AJ is at fault for the teams failures. It would seem that my thoughts have now been validated by non other than the leader of the team. Thanks, Rivers!
Rivers also mentions that the loss of Sproles hurt the team, which you would think would be obvious to everybody...

Pretty much no chance of it really.

Why
Who wants to watch Norv run Sproles up the middle over and over
On the other hand, you have different fingers.

Isn't hindsight cool? It doesn't make you right though.
Sproles has certainly revived his career this year, but he wasn’t playing that well for us in the previous two years.

hind sight is only cool, if you don't know what you're talking about.
the fact is, Sproles hasn’t “revived” anything. he’s simply being used by the saints that “knew” what to do with him, combined with a “better” HC and he’s having the year he’s having. Just like Brees, getting the full potential from the players. Example Colston was a 6th round pick, like VJ, yet Colston has developed faster than VJ. Could it be coaching? Could it be better GM skills?
The peanut gallery has spoken!!!
I disagree with the Colston vs Jackson comparison
Colston has had effectively two great seasons – his rookie season and this season. The seasons in between were plagued with injury and inconsistency. VJ has been consistent for the most part his entire career, without injury, for the Chargers. It was just that whole contract negotiations disaster that has set him back. Now you may say that Colston has a better team oriented mindset than VJ but that would only be speculation because we don’t know the Saints as well as we know the Chargers and we would be on the outside looking in – thinking that the “grass is greener on the other side”.
VJ may not be an elite WR yet but I think that has more to do with Phillip just not having the time to get him the ball AND the fact that the ding-dang TE is always open too! LOL. Also compare the type of routes that the two players are asked to run…. Colston gets a lot of underneath routes that isolate him against a smaller defender. These routes – and I could be wrong cuz Im just shooting from the hip and running my mouth – are normally ran by Malcolm Floyd on our team instead of VJ; partly because I think VJ has more speed than Floyd therefore he is better at stretching the field than Floyd…..
Just my 2 cents.
I want to defend Colston
First he was drafted in the 7th round second to last player taken in the draft
He got their the same year as Drew Brees
The first year Drew counted on him to carry our team as a wr
Since then he hasn’t had to Drew passes the ball around to alot of diff. recievers and backs so you really dont have one person to cover you have to cover our whole wr corps
I think this year he has gotten so many catches because teams are focusing on Sproles and our TE Graham

Also, it's a little to late PR, to step up for Sproles. thanks.
however seizing your opportunity, you have chosen the right time to show us you have a pair.

Would have Sproles really made a difference for us this year?
I agree that he (sproles) is definately still a talented player and still has a lot left in the tank. But like a previous poster has already stated there was a noticeable drop off in his production over the previous two years prior to letting him go which would not have supported a new and hefty contract offer for him. The question is why was his production dropping? Was it that he wasn’t being used effectively? Was it that his frustration with the team was getting the better of him? I don’t know – its that hole hindsight thing.
But having sproles on our team this year would have done “what” for us? We had solid RB play in my opinion. Our offensive line challenged us this season – would sproles have been better at picking up blocks (instead of being used as a receiving back)? Our defense was definately a sore spot for us this year – would sproles have made our defense better – maybe line him up as a outside blitzer?
I think its all mute. It is what it is and it wouldn’t have mattered if sproles was on the 2011 Chargers or not. The only team it would have had an effect on was the Saints, who probably would have still won their division and made it to the playoffs with or without sproles – who does make them better.
Look....we all love/loved Sproles....but...........
He’s a 28 year old 3rd down running back and KR/PR.
We grossly overpaid for his services by franchising him 2 years in a row. I think he was paid between $6.5 and $8 million dollars per year.
Frankly……………RB depth was not really an issue for us. So much so we let Todman get signed off the practice squad for nothing. Our backs were also very competent catching the ball out of the backfield all season long. Matthews had 50 catches and Tolbert had 54.
I’m sure a reasonable offer was made to Sproles and he chose to go elsewhere. Good for him…………….and I’m glad he had a good year. It doesn’t change the fact he’s an aging 3rd down back that we weren’t going to overpay for a third year in a row.
I’d like to see Tolbert move back to FB full time, and a complimentary RB to run with Matthews. Maybe we draft a Lamichael James type back out of college this year in the mid rounds and we’ll have that 3rd down speedster RB again.
Just because a player leaves and has a good year doesn’t mean it was a bad decision to let them walk.
a bit of context for the quote
The quote was said to Nick Canepa, one of the UT’s columnist. Canepa had written an article earlier in the year calling for AJ’s head instead of Norv’s and the loss of Sproles was pointed out as one of the reasons.
In the Canepa column that has River’s quote, Rivers comes back later and said he was kidding with Canepa…
Not sure what that all means, but the quote should not simply be taken as being Rivers blaming the crappy season on the loss of Sproles or blaming AJ instead of Norv…

heres the thing,
when people make off the cuff statements like that there is always some truth to it. Rivers is completely aware that the loss of Sproles is not the reason that the season went to crap. However, Sproles playmaking ability was missed, and there is no argument against that. Sproles is great for dump passes when theres a heavy rush, or a blitz, he can make people miss in the open field; he’s just a dynamic player. You can blame Norv for not calling plays in accordance to personnel on the field all you want, I witnessed that as well, but dont blame him for that personnel not being there. But do not dismiss the reality that Sproles would have helped this team during that 6 game skid.
Rivers statement was in defense of his Coach, who was catching a lot of flack for a lot of what went wrong this season. It wasnt a complete backhand to the GM, but more of a “hey, come on, we’ve lost a lot of talent over the last few years, talent that has gone on to thrive on other teams. It isnt Norv’s fault that we dont have the depth that we once had.” take a look at the moves that have been made, or the lack thereof. Yes, Norv made plenty of mistakes this season, mistakes that I feel were magnified because of the expectations of the fans, and the distaste that has always been present since AJ hired Norv.
Rivers going back to Canepa to say he was kidding was a gentleman’s way of saying “now dont get your panties in a wad off of that statement I just made.”
