Free Agents We Should Target
QB: Brady Quinn- (if he's cheap) I feel he can be a capable backup behind Rivers for years to come. He could benefit from watching an elite QB day in and day out.
RB: Ronnie Brown- I think he would be an upgrade over Tolbert if we let him walk. He's versatile and can teach Matthews a few things, since Matthews never had a veteran RB to learn from coming in to the NFL.
WR: Reggie Wayne- He is a good route runner and wasn't as productive this year without Manning. He would be a good slot WR and would be able to mentor Vincent Brown (since they are around the same size and have the same skill set)
TE: Kellen Davis- Was used more as a blocker with Mike Martz offense, but I believe he can be a good receiving threat. He is an upgrade over McMichael IMO. Can learn a lot from Gates.
S: Tom Zbikowski- I believe he would be a good compliment to Weddle. Good at stopping the run and got to learn from one of the best safeties in the league (Ed Reed).

You should have included a "None of the Above."
Not feelin’ any of those names. The possible exception would be Davis.

Just added it
But i would really like Zbikowski, I don’t think the safety draft class is that strong outside of the first round.
Tom would be an upgrade at a good price.

Yea and he still young too
don’t think he would cost that much either

Good and bad
The positions of need are correct, but outside of Zbikowski the replacements are either old, an injury risk, or overpriced. Or in Davis’ case just not the right fit. Zbikowski could be good since he can also play a huge role on specials, even if he is just a backup at safety. He regularly fields punts and plays on both coverage teams. Quinn still believes that he is a starter and will want a chance to compete for a job and get paid like a starter. Wayne’s better days are definitely behind him at a position where we need to inject some youth. Brown is always hurt, even when he backed up this year and since Mathews always gets dinged I would feel better about someone without such an extensive injury history. Not sure Davis is athletic enough to play TE in our offense.
Agree
I agree with him completely. Although I don’t know the exact number ronnie brown would without a doubt cost too much. He did almost nothing last year for the Eagles and I doubt he’ll get better. While Wayne had to play with an awful QB he still should have putt up better numbers which leads me to believe he’s too old to still be somewhat productive. Zbikowski would be perfect if we can get him considering how bad our secondary was thiis year. The other person who have there that I like is Brady Quinn.Rivers just turned 30 and even if Quinn won’t be his backup having someone capable behind Rivers would come in handy.

Reggie Wayne
Wayne would be a good addition, he is a good route runner and a smart reciever. He wont come cheap though and I dont see AJ paying too much for him. I think PR would love to have him catching balls for us as it seems that VJ is going to get his walking papers.
Wayne would be a great pickup
But I don’t see A.J. going out and getting another WR is Jackson leaves. He’ll probably just give M80 the no.1 slot, and stick Brown in the no.2 area.

He was expendable that's why we let him walk

And yet he was still one of our most valuable players the year he was here.

If we are willing to overpay Clary why couldn't we do the same for Burnett
by chargerclipperfan on Jan 17, 2012 12:19 PM PST up reply actions
We used the money that would have been for Burnett to sign
Antwan Barnes
Travis Laboy
Dante Hughes
Jacques Cesaire
And I’m not sure who else…
Point being instead of overpaying for one position they spread it out to sign more quality depth and relied on Mouton being healthy and contributing.
That's a very loose definition of "quality".

Winning
They had a replacement lined up for Burnett in Donald Butler.
The same can’t be said of Clary.

Gonna be an interesting off-season
Starting with what to do with VJ. I love what he brings to the table in this offense, but I’m not sure we can afford what he might ask. If we don’t end up with him, we should look at FA WR’s like Marques Colston, Reggie Wayne, Robert Meachem, or look in draft for replacement.
I’m not sold on Tyronne Green as our starting Guard. Schilling played pretty good and could progress. Carl Nicks is a FA and would be a great sign but also could be too pricey of an option. Draft?
The biggest FA need in my mind is a OLB. Mario Williams would be an out-of-this-world signing. Robert Mathis would still be an upgrade. Other options, not so sure. Draft is a crap shoot, maybe AJ takes that route again.
A better Strong Safety is needed. Tom Zbikowski might be a cheaper solution, but I like Tyvon Branch. I just like the attitude he plays with and he’s always around the line making tackles. Plus he’s covered Gates pretty solid over the past few years and we have issues covering TE’s. Or draft a top-tier one like Mark Barron. There are a few others in the draft who look intriguing as well. Bacarri Rambo is returning to school, I would be seriously pulling for him if he declared this year.
As for our own… Sign:
Gaither
Garay
Hardwick
Hester
Possibly Tolbert
Mruczkowski
Sperry
Windt (why not)
I hope we can fill a lot of holes through free agency
because its hard relying on the draft every year

Bob Sanders?
He was a good free-agent sign right? I will be surprised if we get a free-agent that is worth his paycheck.
Tell me about it
hopefully AJ does something since his job is on the line

Robert Mathis..............
Convert him to a pass rushing OLB
Would be a good short-term fix
He is still performing at a high level and would upgrade the D but I wonder for how much longer. I wouldn’t want to overpay or commit to more than 3 years and get stuck with his salary while in decline. But if he performs and gets sacks then it will all be a mute point.
No time
to start converting players to a new position so that they can fill a need. I would feel better about signing an already established 3-4 OLB or even drafting an athletic OLB to be groomed in our D.
For some guys it really isn't a big change.......
Mario Williams (who is really big for a LB) made the transition in Houston and did it seamlessly in `1 season. If he hadn’t gotten hurt he was on track to have a monster season as a pass rushing OLB.
I’m just saying there are guys who make the transition and it’s not a big deal.
There really aren’t any “established” 3-4 OLB available via free agency.
I think Jackson will walk
and AJ will spend that money on getting either a pass rusher to compliment Phillips or a Defensive End. I don’t see Smith getting any of the names you’re mentioning, as he’ll stick M80 in the no.1 slot and give Brown is first full season as Rivers no.2 guy.

If VJ walks I hope we go after Mario Williams
even though its highly doubtful
by chargerclipperfan on Jan 19, 2012 1:55 PM PST up reply actions
Houston will probably lock up Williams
I think he would be a big-time splash if we were to get him. Robert Mathis (if we can convert him from a 4-3 DE to a 3-4 OLB system in training camp and the preseason), Calais Cambell for DE and/or Anthony Spencer would be great pickups as well.
And i’m having a second thought about the WR situation: if Jackson does walk, why not make a serious play for Marques Colston? He would fit VJax’s previous role almost perfectly, imo.
